BATON ROUGE, La. – Mizzou Soccer (5-7-2, 2-3-1) fell Sunday afternoon at LSU (8-5-1, 2-3-1) by a score of 2-1. The first half of the game was the difference in the match, as LSU scored both of its goals in the period and dominated possession, keeping Mizzou on its heels for the duration of the half.
The second half was a different story, though, as the Black & Gold found its offensive footing. While they only had three shots in the first period, the Black & Gold put consistent pressure on LSU in the second. In the 87th minute, it finally payed off in the form of a Julissa Cisneros (Moreno Valley, Calif.) goal off of a corner. The freshman forward was able to poke the ball into the back of the net following a header from redshirt junior Madison Lewis (Zionsville, Ind.). Junior defender Peyton Joseph (Highlands Ranch, Colorado) also received an assist on the play, as she took the corner.
Mizzou didn't have enough in the final three minutes, though, and LSU was able to run out the clock and secure its eighth victory of the season.
TURNING POINT
LSU had the edge in what was still a competitive first half, as Mizzou only trailed 1-0 midway through the period. In the 22nd minute, though, that all changed and LSU took control of the game.
LSU had been applying constant pressure up field, and it culminated in an easy goal off of a deflection. Senior goalkeeper Kelsey Dossey (Plainfield, Ind.) had been unbelievable in the early going, but just couldn't get all the way across. The goal was the difference in the game, as it was enough to get LSU across the finish line despite a scoreless second half.
TOP TIGERS
- Cisneros scored her third goal in two games late against LSU. She now shares the team lead in that category with junior forward Sarah Luebbert (Jefferson City, Mo.).
- Both Lewis and Joseph registered their first assists of the season. After only having two assists leading into this weekend, the Tigers had four in two games this weekend.
- Though she allowed two goals, Dossey had six saves, which was enough to move her into sole possession of fifth place on Mizzou's all-time saves list with 181.
QUOTEABLES
"I was so proud of our team in the second half," head coach Bryan Blitz said. "They put pressure on a very good LSU team. That said, though, we don't believe in moral victories. We have to get ready for the next one."
UP NEXT
The Tigers won't play again until they battle Auburn next Sunday in the annual Pink Out game. That game is set to kick off at 2 p.m. CT and will be televised on the SEC Network.
