Cisneros leads @MizzouSoccer past Ole Miss, 2-1

Tigers nab their second SEC win following explosive offensive performance

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Soccer (5-6-2, 2-2-1) pulled out a thrilling win against Ole Miss (8-5-1, 2-2-1) at Walton Stadium on a chilly Thursday night. Freshman forward Julissa Cisneros (Moreno Valley, Calif.) was the exact opposite of cold, though, as she lit up the Rebels for two goals, including the game winner in the 86th minute.

Though the game was dominated by the Tigers throughout, it was close on the scoreboard most of the way. The Black & Gold captured the lead in the first half with a double-assisted goal from the aforementioned Cisneros. Junior defender Anna Frick (Webster Groves, Mo.) initially played the ball into the box, where it found the head of junior forward Sarah Luebbert (Jefferson City, Mo.). Luebbert then redirected the ball back to the near post and Cisneros scored a header goal, which was the first of her career.

Ole Miss didn't go away though, scoring a headed goal of their own just two minutes into the second half of play. The Rebels were able to hang around all night until Cisneros hit the winner late.

With the win, the Tigers move back to .500 in SEC play while also extending their series lead over the Rebels to 4-2-1.

TURNING POINT

With a little under five minutes remaining in the second half, it looked as if the Tigers were headed to OT for the sixth time this season, as neither team could pull away. That all changed in the 86th minute.

The Tigers had been peppering the Ole Miss goal with shots throughout the second half, but were finally able to break through in the nick of time. Cisneros received the ball from Luebbert once again, aimed it and sent a perfect ball into the far corner. The keeper had no chance to save it.

The Tigers would hold the lead for the final four minutes to secure the victory.

TOP TIGERS

  • Cisneros stole the show, scoring two goals on just two shots taken. She becomes the first freshman with a brace since Luebbert did it against Vanderbilt back in 2016.
  • Luebbert tallied two assists for the first time this season, the first multi-assist game for Luebbert since the Tigers beat Illinois in last year's season opener.
  • Fricks' two assists on the game were the first two of her career.
  • Senior goalkeeper Kelsey Dossey (Plainfield, Ind.) had five saves on the game. She now has 175 in her career, moving her into sole possession of sixth place all-time on Mizzou's career saves list.
