ORANGE BEACH, Ala. – Mizzou Soccer (6-10-2, 3-6-1) travels to Orange Beach, Ala., where they will take part in the 2018 SEC Soccer Tournament. Despite falling on the road to No. 12 Tennessee in a thrilling 2-1 OT contest, the Tigers were able to get into the postseason thanks to losses from both Mississippi State and Alabama on the last day of the regular season.
It will be a heated rematch in round one for the Black & Gold, as the team will square off with the LSU Tigers exactly three weeks after the two teams' previous matchup this season. In that game, which was played in Baton Rouge, La., LSU dominated the first half and looked to be headed for an easy victory, as they led 2-0 at halftime. However, Mizzou picked it up in the second half, which culminated in a goal from freshman forward Julissa Cisneros (Moreno Valley, Calif.) in the 87th minute. It wouldn't be enough, though, as the Black & Gold would fall, 2-1.
TALKING POINTS
- Mizzou Soccer is into the SEC Tournament for the seventh straight year. Since joining the conference back in 2012, the Tigers have never missed out on postseason play.
- That said, though, the Tigers only have two SEC Tournament wins in those six trips. One win came in the Tigers' first trip to the SEC Tournament, when they defeated Kentucky 2-1. The other came a season ago when they beat Alabama 3-1 in the opening round.
- History may be on the Tigers' side, though, as they were also the 10 seed a year ago and advanced out of round one with that win.
- Junior forward Sarah Luebbert played a major role in that win, scoring one goal and tallying one assist.
- The Tigers drew LSU in round one. The Tigers fell in Baton Rouge on Oct. 7, 2-1.
- Should they beat LSU in the opening round, the Tigers would move on to face none other than Tennessee, who beat them in the regular season finale.
- The Tigers jumped out to an early lead in their regular season finale, thanks to a Bethany Coons goal in the 33rd minute. It was a low ball put into the far corner that was perfectly taken. It was Coons' second goal of the season and her first since the Gonzaga game.
- Luebbert registered the assist, which was her third of the season. She finished the SEC regular season as Mizzou's points leader, with 11.
- Despite allowing two goals, senior goalkeeper Kelsey Dossey put on an absolute master class against Tennessee. She finished the game with nine saves, one shy of her career high.
- The stats only tell part of the story, though, as she repeatedly denied Bunny Shaw, one of the best players in the world, from point blank range.
- With her nine saves in the game, Dossey now has 200 career saves. She is one of just four Mizzou Soccer goalkeepers to ever accomplish that feat.
- With her 77 saves so far this season, she now has also cracked the top-ten all-time on Mizzou's all-time single-season saves list.
LOOKING AT THE OPPONENT… LSU
- LSU finished the regular season with an 11-6-1 record, including a 5-4-1 mark in SEC play.
- The Tigers finished the season on a tear, winning four of their final five games. They beat Mizzou to start that streak, and finished it by beating then-No. 8 South Carolina and Mississippi State.
- Sophomore forward Adrienne Richardson led LSU in points, finishing the season with seven goals and one assist.
- The goalkeeper matchup looks to be a good one, as LSU senior goalkeeper Caroline Brockmeier is third in the league in average saves-per-game, with 4.44. She trails only Dossey (4.53) and Georgia goalkeeper Emory Weegener (5.18).
- In the game between the two earlier this season, LSU got goals from junior forward Marlena Cutura and freshman forward Molly Thompson.
