COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Soccer (6-9-2, 3-5-1) travels to No. 12 Tennessee (12-2-2, 6-2-1) on Thursday at 6 p.m. CT with its SEC Tournament hopes on the line. The Tigers now sit in 10th place in the SEC standings after a big 2-0 win over Florida on Senior Day. The Tigers' first win over the Gators since 2013 gave the team's postseason hopes a huge boost, as the Tigers now control their own destiny: if they beat the Volunteers, they are headed to Orange Beach, Alabama.
In the crucial victory against Florida, junior forward Sarah Luebbert (Jefferson City, Mo.) scored a goal off an assist from sophomore midfielder Bella Alessi (Fort Collins, Colo.) in the first half. In the second half, freshman forward Skye Kingsley (Naperville, Ill.) sealed the game, scoring the insurance goal off an assist from sophomore forward Morcquess Oliphant (Frisco, Tx.).
TALKING POINTS
- The scenario for the Tigers is simple: if they win, they are into the SEC Tournament.
- That will be easier said than done, though, as the Tigers have never won a game in Knoxville.
- If Mizzou loses in Knoxville, they can still qualify, but the team will need help from Mississippi State and/or Alabama.
- The Tigers' postseason hopes got a major boost with the team's recent 2-0 victory against Florida. It was the first win for the Tigers over the Gators since 2013 and only the program's second ever.
- The Tigers scored two goals for just the fourth time this season. The defense also did its part, as the Tigers posted their fifth shutout of the season.
- The goals in the game came from junior forward Sarah Luebbert and freshman forward Skye Kingsley.
- Luebbert's fourth goal of the season, which leads the team, came in the 10th minute. It was probably her easiest goal of the season, as a low ball played across the face of goal by sophomore midfielder Bella Alessi fell right to her feet. All Luebbert had to do was tap it in.
- The assist from Alessi was the first of her career.
- Kingsley's goal was all about effort. The freshman's second goal of the season came on clean-up, as sophomore forward Morcquess Oliphant headed a deflection toward goal and had it saved. The ball bounced right to Kingsley's feet and she was able to put it in the back of the net.
- Kingsley joins Cisneros as the only freshmen to score for Mizzou this season. It was the first goal for Kingsley since the opening weekend win over Iowa State on the road.
- Oliphant, like Alessi, picked up her first career assist.
- Senior goalkeeper Kelsey Dossey picked up her fourth shutout of the season and 11th of her career against Florida.
- Dossey now has 191 careers saves, and needs just six more this season to pass Mizzou Soccer legend Liz LaTour for sole possession of fourth place on Mizzou's all-time saves list.
- Additionally, Dossey needs just three more saves this season to crack the top-ten mark on the single-season saves list.
LOOKING AT THE OPPONENT… TENNESSEE
- Tennessee sits at 12-2-2 overall with victories against St. John's, George Mason, Xavier, Wright State, Tennessee-Martin, Eastern Tennessee State, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Kentucky, Florida, LSU and Texas A&M.
- The Vols recent 4-0 victory against then-No.5 Texas A&M is the team's best win on the season and the Aggies first home loss on the season. After a scoreless first half, Tennessee scored four goals in the second half in the duration of six minutes.
- Senior forward/midfielder Bunny Shaw leads the team with nine goals, while only playing in nine games on the season. She also leads the SEC in game-winning goals, shots per game, points per game and goals per game. Against the Aggies, Shaw recorded one goal and two assists.
- The Vols also share their ball amongst their teammates, as they rank second in the SEC with 37 assists, which is good for 2.31 assists per game.
