COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Soccer (6-9-2, 3-5-1) secured an impressive win against Florida (5-9-3, 3-4-2) at Walton Stadium on Sunday afternoon in its final home game of the season, beating the Gators 2-0. The win against Florida is just the second ever for the program, and its first victory over the Gators since 2013. Mizzou's victory also gives its postseason hopes a major boost, as they now have 10 points in a crowded SEC table.
Mizzou's offense was humming all afternoon against Florida, as junior forward Sarah Luebbert (Jefferson City, Mo.) and freshman forward Skye Kingsley (Naperville, Ill.) each chipped in a goal to lead the Tigers to victory. Mizzou's staunch defense silenced Florida's normally potent offense on Sunday, as senior goalkeeper Kelsey Dossey (Plainfield, Ind.) recorded her 11th career shutout courtesy of her four saves.
TURNING POINT
The Black and Gold offense came out with a bang on Sunday afternoon, as Luebbert's goal in the 10th minute off an assist by sophomore midfielder Bella Alessi (Fort Collins, Colo.) gave Mizzou an early 1-0 lead. The ball was played low and along the ground, and all Luebbert had to do was tap it in.
An insurance goal by Kingsley in the 65th minute off an assist from sophomore forward Morcquess Oliphant (Frisco, Tx.) ensured the lead remained intact as Mizzou dominated both sides of the ball throughout the remainder of the match.
TOP TIGERS
- Luebbert scored her fourth goal of the season, recording five total shots with three shots on goal. With her goal today, Luebbert now has 56 career points, which moved her into sole possession of 10th place all-time.
- Kingsley scored her second goal of the season, and her first since the Tigers squared off against Iowa State on the season's opening weekend (8/19/18).
- Dossey had four saves in the game. She now has 64 this season and 191 in her legendary career.
QUOTEABLES
"Some might say we have been unlucky this year, but I believe you create your own luck," Luebbert said. "It was nice to see the ball go in, but that's something we practice every day. We just keep trusting the process."
