STARKVILLE, Miss. – Freshman Tess Rellihan (Kansas City, Missouri) tallied her fifth goal in six matches but it was not enough as the Mizzou soccer team fell at Mississippi State, 3-1, Thursday night in Starkville, Mississippi. The Tigers fell to 5-5-1 overall and 1-1-0 in SEC action, while the Bulldogs improved to 7-1-1 and 1-1-0.
TURNING POINT
With Mizzou pushing for an equalizer late, Mississippi State countered with its third and final goal of the match in the 84th minute to put the game out of reach for the Tigers. An initial Bulldog shot to the left post was blocked in the box by the defense but the attempt sent redshirt senior keeper Kristen Rivers (Lawrenceville, Georgia) to her left. Mississippi State's MaKayla Waldner then knocked the loose ball to the right post before Rivers could recover.
KEY MOMENTS
The Bulldogs scored twice within five minutes in the first half, on goals from Brooke McKee and Walder, to take a 2-0 advantage 22 minutes into the contest.
Rellihan pulled Mizzou within one, 2-1, in the 71st minute to put the visitors right back into the contest. Freshman Lindsey Whitmore (Henderson, Nevada) sent a ball into the box that deflected off a Bulldog defender and bounced into free space. Rellihan ran onto the loose ball and sent a left-footed strike to the keeper's left and into the back of the net for her team-leading fifth goal of the season.
QUOTABLES
Mizzou Head Coach Bryan Blitz
"Hats off to Mississippi State, they had a really good plan. We played really well to try to turn it around on the road, but the lesson here is you're not going to be able to turn it around all the time. We'll learn from this and be ready for a good Texas A&M team at home on Sunday."
