@MizzouSoccer Notches Third-Straight Win With 3-0 Victory Over Albany

COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Mizzou soccer team recorded its third-consecutive win and third shutout of the season with a 3-0 win over Albany Sunday night at Walton Stadium. Freshman Tess Rellihan (Kansas City, Missouri) tallied two of Missouri's goals, while redshirt sophomore Madison Lewis (Zionsville, Indiana) had the game-winner.

The Tigers moved to 5-4-1 this season while the Great Danes fell to 2-7.

Turning Point

Mizzou earned a dangerous free kick after a foul freshman Lindsey Whitmore (Henderson, Nevada) was fouled just outside the box. Lewis took the free kick and beat the goalie with a low shot to the far post for a 1-0 Tiger lead in the 34th minute. The goal was Lewis' third of the season and her first game-winner of the year.

Key Moments

The Tigers finally struck again with the second goal in the 70th minute. Rellihan knocked in her first of the night on rebound over the keeper for a 2-0 advantage. Freshman Zoe Cross sent a shot on net that the Great Dane keeper punched away, but Rellihan sent the rebound into the net for her third goal of the year.

Rellihan struck again in 79th minute with a left-footed strike over the keeper to extend the Tiger lead to 3-0. Whitmore earned an assist on the goal.

Quotables

Mizzou Head Coach Bryan Blitz
"I think winning is hard no matter what, so the most important game is always the next game, no matter who it is. It took us awhile to break [Albany] down, so I think it was a good team effort tonight and our depth really helped us."

Freshman Tess Rellihan
"I've been a forward my whole life, I've always thought about (scoring goals) as my job. I knew it would be hard work and I know I wanted to help the team early on, but it is kind of a good surprise to be able to help so much so early."

Mizzou Notes

  • Freshman Tess Rellihan recorded two goals in the match to give her a team-leading four goals this season, all of which have come in the last five games
