Late Goals Lift @MizzouSoccer to 3-1 Win Over Georgia in SEC Opener

COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Mizzou soccer team used two late goals over a four minute span to claim a 3-1 win over Georgia in the Southeastern Conference opener Friday night at Walton Stadium. Seniors Jessica Allie Hess (Kearney, Missouri) and Jessica Johnson (Los Angeles, California) and redshirt sophomore Madison Lewis (Zionsville, Indiana) all found the back of the net and junior keeper Kelsey Dossey (Plainfield, Indiana) stopped a penalty kick to lead Missouri.

The Tigers improved to 4-4-1 overall and 1-0-0 in SEC action with the win, while the Bulldogs fell to 4-4-1 and 0-1-0.

TURNING POINT

With the match knotted at 1-1 in the 85th minute, senior Kaitlyn Clark (Liberty, Missouri) dribbled to the left endline, cut into the box and sent a diagonal cross through the box. Hess ran onto Clark's pass and knocked in a 15-yard strike for the eventual game-winner. The goal was the first of the season for Hess, who became the eighth Tiger to notch a goal in 2017.

KEY MOMENTS

Johnson tallied her team-leading third goal of the season to put Missouri up 1-0 in the seventh minute. Dossey lofted a goal kick to Clark, who sent a through ball up to Johnson, who volleyed the ball over the Georgia keeper for the game's first goal.

The Bulldogs were awarded a penalty kick in the 28th minute after Mizzou was whistled for a handball in the box. Dossey knocked the shot off the post and Hess cleared to keep Georgia off the scoreboard.

Georgia equalized in the 65th minute but Hess and Clark combined for the game-winner in the 85th minute. The Tigers then added an insurance goal when Lewis knocked home a low strike off a back pass from freshman Tess Rellihan (Kansas City, Missouri). It was Lewis' second goal of the year.

QUOTABLES

Mizzou Head Coach Bryan Blitz
"Any win is great but this is a great win against a really good Georgia team. I think our depth and the versatility within our team is a strength, we asked people to play different places. To close that out at the end has been a big emphasis for us."

Senior Midfielder Allie Hess
"I knew if I got in the box on (Kaitlyn Clark's) cross, I could get a finish on it. She did the dirty work, I just had to put the ball in the goal. The first SEC win always feels good, so hopefully we can keep it rolling."

MIZZOU NOTES

  • Senior Jessica Johnson tallied her team-leading third goal of the year in the first half. She stands as Mizzou's active career points (37) and goals (13) leader.
  • Senior Kaitlyn Clark assisted on two of Mizzou's three goals on the day, her first assists of the year. She led the squad with seven assists a year ago.
  • Junior goalkeeper Kelsey Dossey also picked up her first career point as she earned an assist on Mizzou's first goal
  • Redshirt junior Madison Lewis became the third Tiger with at least two goals in 2017, joining Johnson (3) and freshman Tess Rellihan
  • Mizzou recorded a season-high nine shots on goal against Georgia
