Jessica Yuen paced the Tigers, finishing tied for third overall at the tournament
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Women's Golf launched its season in style at the Jim West Challenge in The Woodlands, Texas, finishing the tournament with a three-round team score of 854 (282, 291, 281). That marks the third-best 54-hole team score in program history.
Mizzou placed sixth overall in a talented field that featured four teams ranked in the final Golfweek Top 25 last May. The Tigers' solid finish at the Jim West Challenge was aided by a strong final round. Mizzou carded a 3-under-par 281 on Tuesday, the seventh-best 18-hole team round in program history.
"It was a strong finish for our team today," head coach Stephanie Priesmeyer said. "It was arguably one of Jess Yuen's best tournament performances to date against some of the highest ranked players in the country. It was certainly a group effort this week. We had three players battling a bit of a stomach bug during the event so to finish as well as we did is a great testament to the kind of grit this squad possesses. It's early and we still have some things to learn and grow from, but this is certainly the type of start we were wanting to begin our season this fall."
Sophomore Jessica Yuen paced Mizzou and tied for third overall among 71 competitors after posting a career-low 204 (70, 65, 69). Yuen racked up 13 birdies during the tournament on her way to the second-best three-round performance in program history.
It marked the highest tournament finish of Yuen's career. She carded two sub-70 rounds in the same tournament for the first time in her career and shattered her previous career-low three-round score by 10 strokes.
Junior Emma Allen posted a 210 (66, 71, 73), securing the second-best tournament performance of her career. Allen shot a 66 in the opening round on Monday, which ties for second all-time at Mizzou.
Senior Clara Young and junior Cayce Hendrickson added to Mizzou's impressive season-opening tournament. Young's three-round score of 219 was her lowest since carding a 213 at the 2015 Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown. She finished the tournament with a 1-under-par 70 on Tuesday.
Hendrickson highlighted her tournament by posting a 2-under-par 69 in the third and final round. The 69 was a career-low for Hendrickson, giving her the first sub-70 round of her career.
Mizzou returns to action Sept. 18-19 at the Mercedes Benz Collegiate Championship in Knoxville, Tennessee.
