Sophomore Jessica Yuen carded a 65 in the second round to tie the program's 18-hole individual record
THE WOODLANDS, Texas – Mizzou Women's Golf got off a strong start on day one at the Jim West Challenge, and sit in sixth as a team after 36 holes of play. The team posted a two-round total of 5-over-par (573: 282-291) at the tournament, which is hosted by Texas State at the Fazio Course in The Woodlands, Texas. After some last minute adjustments, the course was played as a Par 71.
The Tigers carded a 282 as a group in the opening round, which ties the best round the team recorded all of last season. Mizzou's first round also tied for the 7th-best 18-hole team round in program history. On top of that, it was also the Tigers' lowest ever team round at the Jim West Challenge.
Sophomore standout Jessica Yuen (Bolingbrook, Ill.) is currently tied for second going into day two after posting an opening-round of 1-under (70) and then finishing with a second round of 6-under (65), which tied the program record in a single round. Monday marked the third and fourth time she's carded a 70 or lower in her career, respectively. She shattered her previous career-low of 69, finishing with a cumulative total of 10 birdies through 36 holes.
"We were really pleased with our start this morning," head coach Stephanie Priesmeyer said. "Everyone was very consistent, we hit our targets and had minimal big numbers. Emma (Allen) was oustanding and had her putter working early for her. We had tremendous play from Jess Yuen. She bounced back from having flu like symptoms during the practice round better than we could have imagined. She fought really hard out there today. This is a great event with really strong teams."
Junior Emma Allen (Southampton, England) matched her career-best of 5-under-par (66) in her opening round and was tied for first though 18 holes. She then finished her day by shooting even (71) in the second round, and is off to her best start to a tournament through 36 holes in her career. Allen also posted her ninth career sub-70 round today along with being just a stroke shy of the program record of 65.
The rest of the Tigers kept their opening round scores all in the 70s today. Junior Cayce Hendrickson and senior Clara Young both carded a 73 in the first round.
