COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Mizzou soccer team responded to an early first deficit with two unanswered goals by freshmen to catapult the Tigers to a 2-1 win over San Diego State at Walton Stadium Sunday night. Mizzou moves to 3-4-1 on the year, while the San Diego State fell to 3-4.
Turning Point:
With the Tigers and Aztecs tied, Mizzou struck in the 69th minute with a goal by freshman Lindsey Whitmore (Henderson, Nevada). She pounced on a loose rebound off the Aztec keeper and one-timed a strike into the back of the net for her first career goal.
Key Moments:
San Diego State took an early lead with a goal in the sixth minute. Mia Root tapped in a rebound from Esther Arnarsdottir for the score.
Freshmen Mo Adesanmi (Sugar Land, Texas) cleared the ball from an open net to avoid a two goal deficit early in the first half.
After several near-chances, Mizzou finally equalized with a strike to the top right shelf from freshman Tess Rellihan (Kansas City, Missouri) in the 36th minute. Off an assist from redshirt sophomore Madison Lewis (Zionsville, Indiana), Rellihan unleashed a 25-yard strike to the keeper's right to tie the game a 1-1. The goal was Rellihan's second on the season.
Quotables:
Mizzou Head Coach Bryan Blitz
"The depth really showed well today. We had a lot of great performances off the bench, highlighted by Tess [Rellihan] getting the equalizer and Lindsey [Whitmore] scoring the game-winner. One of our strengths is the versatility of our players and to be able to trust each of our players."

"This was a huge win for our team considering the adversities we've faced as a team in the past couple weeks. This win here is just going to give us the momentum we need to go against Georgia Friday night and for the rest of the season."
