@MizzouSoccer Blanks Iowa State, 2-0, in Home Opener

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Senior Savannah Trujillo (Kansas City, Missouri) and sophomore Sarah Luebbert (Jefferson City, Missouri) scored within four minutes of each other in the second half as the Mizzou soccer team posted a 2-0 shutout over Iowa State on Sunday afternoon at Walton Stadium. The Tigers improved to 2-0 on the season with the win, while the Cyclones fell to 1-1.

TURNING POINT

Trujillo and Luebbert teamed up for the ultimate game-winner in the 51st minute. Luebbert made a run down the right sideline and drove a cross toward goal from the endline. Her pass skimmed the crossbar, eluding the Iowa State keeper, to fall right to Trujillo at the far post. The senior tapped in a point-blank shot to put Mizzou up 1-0.

KEY MOMENTS

Iowa State attempted six shots in the first half, including a pair of near-chances in the 25th minute. Redshirt senior goalkeeper Kristen Rivers (Lawrenceville, Georgia) made a diving stop to her right but the ball rolled away from her. The rebound fell right to Cyclone Courtney Powell, but Rivers made a body save to keep the Cyclones off the board.

The Tigers added their second and final goal only four minutes after the first tally. Luebbert headed home a 12-yard header off a pinpoint cross from redshirt sophomore Madison Lewis for the 2-0 Mizzou advantage.

QUOTABLES

Mizzou Head Coach Bryan Blitz
"Iowa State was good. To be frank, I thought they outplayed us in the first half. We just finished our chances, they didn't. That's a team that's going to go far.

"Credit to the young babies who came in in the second part of the first half, Lindsey Whitmore, Tess Rellihan, Morcquess Oliphant, I thought they really did some good things. From Friday to Sunday, our depth from the freshmen really helped us."

Senior Savannah Trujillo
"The second half has been good to us so far. That's why you have two halves in soccer. Every day we try to come out and get better. I think today we did that in the second half.

"Sarah took (the ball) down, got all the way to the endline and crossed it. It skimmed right off the crossbar and was put on a silver platter right at my feet, honestly. I just had to tap it in. It was a beautiful cross on Sarah's part."
