Jacobs records second first-place finish in as many meets, Thames qualifies for 400m hurdles finals
AUSTIN, Texas – Redshirt sophomore Gabi Jacobs (Bloomington, Ill.) recorded a top-10 mark in the nation on Thursday as the Mizzou Track & Field team had student-athletes competing in two meets in the Lone Star State. Jacobs recorded a personal-record and first place finish in the discus throw at the Bobcat Invitational in San Marcos, Texas, while senior Valerie Thames (Milwaukee, Wis.) highlighted the day for the Tigers at the Texas Relays in Austin, Texas, qualifying for the 400m hurdles finals after finishing eighth in the preliminary round.
Jacobs, who set her PR in the discus with a throw of 54.15m (177-7.75) at the CMU Open on March 18, once again outmatched the competition on Thursday, claiming first place by more than eight meters. The Tiger sophomore recorded a throw of 55.69m (182-8), a mark which currently ranks eighth in the nation. Jacobs currently ranks second all-time in program history in the discus and continues to close in on the school record mark of 57.31m (188-0), set by Kearsten Peoples in 2014.
Over in Austin, Thames posted a time of 58.83 in the 400m hurdles to clinch a spot in Friday's finals. The Tiger senior, who holds the school record in the 100m and 400m hurdles, will now toe the start line in three events on Friday as she is slated to compete in the prelims of the 100m hurdles, as well as a member of the 4x400m relay team.
Four other Tigers – three throwers and one hurdler – competed on Thursday at the Texas Relays. In throws events, freshman Allie Webb (Platte City, Mo.) finished 13th in the javelin with a throw of 34.80m (114-2), sophomore Rebecca Keating (Reading, England) finished 14th in the hammer throw with a mark of 54.67m (179-4) and redshirt senior Ahren Bohanan (St. Charles, Mo.) finished 19th in the hammer throw with a throw of 58.90m (193-3). In the men's 400m hurdles, redshirt junior Jerrad Mason (Bridgetown, Barbados) finished 19th with a time of 52.55.
