Bea Machado Santos and Amina Ismail highlighted the day with a doubles win over Florida’s 9th-ranked No. 1 pairing
COLUMBIA, MO. – No. 44 Mizzou (10-8, 1-6 SEC) hung tough, but ultimately fell to No. 1 Florida, 4-0, on Sunday afternoon at the Mizzou Tennis Complex. The Gators claimed the doubles point and earned victories at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 singles to secure the match win.
In doubles play, senior Bea Machado Santos (Lisbon, Portgual) and junior Amina Ismail (Maineville, Ohio) toppled Florida's ninth-ranked doubles pairing, 6-3. It marked Santos' and Ismail's highest ranked doubles win of their respective careers.
Santos and Ismail recently cracked the ITA national doubles rankings, coming in at No. 64. The duo has now downed three consecutive ranked pairings after a 6-4 win over South Carolina's No. 44 doubles team of Paige Cline and Hadley Berg on Friday. Santos and Ismail have three SEC victories and a team-high nine wins as a double team this season, the most of any Mizzou duo.
Florida clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles and a narrow 6-4 victory over Mizzou's No. 2 pairing of freshman Tate Schroeder (Centennial, Colo.) and senior Cassidy Spearman (Laguna Niguel, Calif.).
In singles play, after Florida grabbed wins at No. 2 and No. 3, Santos and freshman Mackenzy Middlebrooks (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) battled in tight matches at No. 1 and No. 4, respectively. Santos dropped her opening set 1-6, but forced a tiebreak in set two and fell just short, losing 1-6, 6-7 (4). Middlebrooks forced three sets and trailed 2-3 in the decisive set before Florida clinched the overall match.
Mizzou returns to action with a trip to No. 8 Vanderbilt on Friday evening. First serve is set for 5 p.m. in Nashville.
