CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Sophomore LHP Michael Plassmeyer (St. Louis, Mo.) took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and the offense went over the 10-hit mark for the fifth time in seven games as Mizzou Baseball took game four of the Kleberg Bank College Classic, 9-0, Saturday night at Whataburger Field. Six Tiger pitchers combined to throw a one-hit shutout while striking out a season-high 15 strikeouts as the staff was dominant all night. It was the first one-hitter for Mizzou since Feb 22, 2015 against Purdue, also at the Kleberg Classic. Mizzou has now won six in a row, its longest winning streak since Feb. 24-March 4 of last season, and moves to 6-1 on the year.
Plassmeyer earned his second win of the season after going a career-high 6.0 innings while allowing just one hit, no walks and a career-high eight strikeouts. He earned the win to go to 2-0 on the year and lowered his ERA to 1.64 while tying the Kleberg Bank Classic record for fewest hits allowed by a pitcher in a single game (5.0 or more innings). The offense was explosive as well with 15 hits as eight players tallied knocks with six players tallying multi-hit outings. Freshman Kameron Misner (Poplar Bluff, Mo.) led the charge with his second three-hit game of the season with all three hits going the other way. He and C Brett Bond (St. Louis, Mo.) drove in a team-high two runs.
Mizzou got on the board first using RBI double from Alex Samples (Bridgeport, Texas) in the top of the second inning, the first double of his Division I career. Mizzou then exploded for four runs in the top of the third with an RBI single by Misner and a two-run double by Bond. Robbie Glendinning (Scarborough, Australia) then pitched in an RBI single to extend the lead to 5-0.
Plassmeyer continued to deal from there, matching his previous career-high of six strikeouts following the fourth inning. He tallied a new career-high with seven strikeouts to end the fifth inning. Mizzou then tacked on two more in the sixth on an RBI triple by Connor Brumfield (Columbia, Mo.) triple as he has now hit safely in every game this year. Misner tallied his second hit and second RBI just one batter later to extend the lead to 7-0.
With a no-hitter into the sixth inning, Plassmeyer got into a 14-pitch battle with 1B Dan Brokop, who broke up the no-no with a single into left field. Plassmeyer responded by breezing through the next three batters, including picking up his eight strikeout to end the frame.
The bullpen took over from there and picked up where Plassmeyer left off. Ty Shoaff (Akron, Ohio) came on and struck out the side in the seventh. Nolan Gromacki (Smithville, Mo.) struck out the first two batters in the eighth and Bryce Montes De Oca (Lawrence, Kan.) struck out the only batter he faced in the frame sending the game to the ninth with Mizzou striking out seven straight batters. Ryan Lee (Grandview, Mo.) tossed a shutout ninth, posting a strikeout as well.
Mizzou looks for the Kleberg Bank College Classic Title tomorrow at 11 a.m. against border rival Illinois. The game will air live on KTGR and MUTigers.com. Quoting Bieser
Opening Statement…
"Outstanding job by Michael Plassmeyer. Just really impressed with the bullpen – sometimes you get games stretched out and guys don't come in focused. I thought those guys did an outstanding job. Really proud of the way we responded today. Sometimes - I am not going to lie I was a little nervous about how we would respond after a tough game and a big win yesterday, whether we would come out and be ready to go. I thought in the top of the first we got after it and played really well."
On Michael Plassmeyer's performance…
"Well he was really hitting that inside fastball. That just totally opened up the whole plate for him. He felt good. The ball was coming out really good and his fastball was sneaking up on people. But the location – just like I said earlier - and when he is successful he's able to take his fastball and move it in and out and up and down and let the other pitches work off of a well-located fastball."
On pulling Plassmeyer after six innings…
"Well it would have been really hard if he would have had zero hits. It's early in the season and the biggest thing we have to do is protect our guys and make sure they are in it for the long haul. I loved the way he was throwing the ball. It was tough to take him out and not let him go seven innings because he still felt good. He was a week behind everyone else and we felt like trying to push him into that mid 90s in that last inning was a little too much for him. I thought it was the right time to get him out and hand it over to the bullpen."
