Brianna Lashway finishes 2-0 as Mizzou picks up its fifth straight road win of the season
MINNEAPOLIS – Mizzou Tennis (6-2) downed Minnesota (3-3), 4-1, Friday afternoon, giving the Tigers five straight victories in true road matches. Junior Brianna Lashway (Bradenton, Fla.) led the team with a pair of wins to hand the Tigers their sixth win of the season.
"We got off to a really good start in doubles," head coach Colt Gaston said. "Lashway was the biggest thing today, she really stepped up and put the pedal down at the No. 1 spot. She went in and did the things we asked for with energy and work ethic. She put in a really good match. That helped us get ahead early, and the rest of the team followed."
Mizzou's strong doubles start was steered by seniors Cassidy Spearman (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) and Bea Machado Santos (Lisbon, Portugal). The pairing improved to 4-0 as a doubles team this year by taking the No. 2 match, 6-2. The Tigers followed that with a 6-4 win at No. 1 doubles as Lashway and junior Clare Raley (Atlanta, Ga.) clinched the doubles point. Mizzou has now won the doubles point in seven of eight matches this season.
The Tigers were fast out of the gates in singles play as Lashway took little time to take down Minnesota's No. 1, Caroline Ryba. Lashway won the match 6-2, 6-3 to give her 10 overall singles victories this season and Mizzou a 2-0 match lead.
After Minnesota took the No. 6 match, freshman Tate Schroeder (Centennial, Colo.) provided a 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 4 singles. Schroeder has breezed through singles play this year, as she now holds a 6-1 record, with five of those wins coming at No. 4.
With Mizzou up 3-1, junior Amina Ismail (Maineville, Ohio) prevailed in the No. 5 match. Ismail dropped the opening set and responded in style, swiftly securing the second and third sets to earn the match win, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. Friday's comeback victory gives Ismail a team-best 11 singles wins and 22 overall victories this year. It also clinched the match for Mizzou.
Mizzou will play the final two games of its season-opening 10-match road trip tomorrow against Memphis and South Dakota. First serve against Memphis is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. C.T. with the match vs. South Dakota following at 6 p.m. C.T.
