Junior middle blocker averaged 2.25 blocks per set over Mizzou’s recent perfect 2-0 stretch
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Mizzou Volleyball junior Alyssa Munlyn (Suwanee, Ga.) was named Week 13 Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Week, announced Monday (Nov. 20) by the league's office.
The honor marks Munlyn's third weekly award by the SEC office this season. Overall, the Tiger middle blocker has produced 10 weekly honors from the conference over her career. Munlyn was recognized as the SEC Defensive Player of the Week twice and overall Player of the Week once in her 2016 sophomore campaign, while garnering SEC Freshman of the Week honors four times over her 2015 freshman season.
"We're very happy for Alyssa," Mizzou Volleyball head coach Wayne Kreklow said. "She had another great week for us. She's working very hard and the results speak for themselves. I'm really pleased that all of that hard work is paying such big dividends for her and the team. She's setting a great example for all of the young players in our program!"
Mizzou (19-10, 12-4 SEC) claimed a pair of victories this past week with wins against Mississippi State (Nov. 17) and Arkansas (Nov. 19). Over her recent two-match stretch, Munlyn posted four solo blocks and 18 total blocks (2.25 per set), keying the Tigers' outstanding collective blocking efforts and perfect record on the court.
In Starkville, Miss., last Friday evening, Munlyn recorded two solo blocks and five overall. Two days later inside the Hearens Center, she matched her 2017 season high with 13 total blocks against the Razorbacks. The incredible output ranks as the most individual single-match blocks in Mizzou history.
Overall this year, Munlyn has recorded 10-plus total blocks in a match five times. In comparison, the Suwanee, Ga., native only recorded two double-digit total block matches over her first two seasons at Mizzou.
Through Mizzou's 29 matches played this season, Munlyn currently paces the SEC with 173 total blocks and 143 block assists. She also places second with 1.54 blocks per set and 30 solo blocks. In SEC only action, Munlyn leads the conference with 95 total blocks and 19 solo blocks. Additionally, she places second with 1.58 blocks per set and third with 76 block assists.
In the all-time Mizzou single-season individual record book, Munlyn's 1.54 blocks per set, 173 total blocks and 143 block assists all rank first.
