COLUMBIA, Mo. – Sophomores Sarah Luebbert (Jefferson City, Mo.) and Grace Kitts (Leawood, Kan.) each tallied goals but the Mizzou soccer team suffered a 3-2 overtime match to Alabama Sunday afternoon in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The Tigers fell to 6-11-1 overall and 2-7-0 in Southeastern Conference action, while the Crimson Tide improved to 11-6-1 and 3-5-1.
TURNING POINT
Alabama was awarded a penalty kick only 52 seconds into overtime. Abbie Boswell converted the shot from the penalty spot to give the Crimson Tide the victory.
KEY MOMENTS
The home side scored only 25 seconds into the match when a shot hit off the left post and bounced over the goal line.
Luebbert knotted the match at 1-1 with her team-leading sixth goal of the season in the 28th minute. Senior Jessica Johnson (Los Angeles, Calif.) played the ball off to Luebbert, who took a touch and sent a low strike that bounced into the lower right corner of the net.
The Crimson Tide responded 10 minutes later on a breakaway. Alexis Mouton got behind the Tiger defense and forced junior keeper Kelsey Dossey (Plainfield, Ind.) off her line. The ball squirted away from Dossey and Boswell poked the ball into the open net.
Mizzou again equalized in the final minute of the first half. Sophomore Peyton Joseph (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) sent a long cross in front of the net that Kitts deflected past the Alabama keeper for a 2-2 game. The goal was the first of Kitts' Missouri career, while Joseph earned her second assist of the season.
