TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Mizzou Men's Basketball held its opponent to a conference play-low 68 points, but ultimately fell at Alabama, 68-56, on Wednesday night inside Coleman Coliseum. Sophomore guard Terrence Phillips (Orange County, Calif.) contributed 34 solid minutes off the bench, leading the team in scoring, assists and steals with 16 points, seven dimes and four steals.
Joining Phillips in double-figure scoring was senior forward Russell Woods (Chicago, Ill.), who put up 13 points with a perfect 7-of-7 mark from the free throw line. The effort was Woods' career-best outing from the free throw line. As a team, Mizzou shot 50 percent (7-of-14) from three-point territory, matching its best shooting from beyond the arc on the season. Phillips led the way, connecting on 3-of-5 from deep range.
Freshman guard Frankie Hughes (Cleveland, Ohio) and junior forward Jordan Barnett (St. Louis, Mo.) paced the Tigers in the first half, scoring five points each, but Mizzou trailed, 26-19 after the opening period. The Tigers' defense kept them in the game during the half as head coach Kim Anderson's squad snagged five steals, including two from sophomore guard K.J. Walton (Indianapolis, Ind.).
Mizzou cut into Alabama's lead following a Phillips three-pointer and two free throws from Woods, trimming the Crimson Tide's advantage to four points, but the Tigers could not draw any closer in the game. Alabama was helped by six second half three-pointers, pushing its lead to as large as 15 points. Alabama shot better than 50 percent from the field and the three-point line in the second half to outscore the Tigers by five after the break and win, 68-56.
The Tigers return home to Mizzou Arena for their next contest vs. Ole Miss on Saturday, Jan. 21. Tipoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. CT and will be televised on SEC Network.
