SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Mizzou soccer team suffered a 1-0 defeat to No. 23 Notre Dame Sunday evening at Alumni Stadium in South Bend, Ind. The loss dropped the Tigers to 4-2-0 on the season, while the Fighting Illini improved to 5-1-0.
Junior Kaitlyn Clark (Liberty, Mo.) had three shots in the match, including two on goal. In the 86th minute with the Tigers in search of the equalizer, Clark got around a defender and created enough space to unleash a left-footed shot on net. The low attempt was too close to the Fighting Irish goalie, who smothered the ball to thwart the attempt.
The game's lone goal came in the 61st minute, when Notre Dame's Jennifer Westendorf sent a screaming 21-yard shot past Mizzou sophomore keeper Kelsey Dossey (Plainfield, Ind.).
The Tiger defense held firm for most of the match, forcing the Fighting Irish to long-range shots from outside the box.
Dossey made three saves in net for Missouri.
The Tigers open Southeastern Conference action on Friday, Sept. 9 when the team travels to Oxford, Miss., to face Ole Miss at 7 p.m. CT.
