COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Mizzou women's soccer team won its second straight game, besting Kentucky by a score of 2-0 at Walton Stadium. The Tigers dominated play throughout, as they outshot the Wildcats 32-7 and had a 13-6 edge in corner kicks.
Missouri improved to 7-3-0 overall and 2-1-1 in Southeastern Conference action, while Kentucky fell to 4-4-2 and 0-2-1.
The Tigers showed how much firepower they have on their roster in the first half, with 18 times shots in the first 45 minutes alone. Mizzou also showed their capacity to play with pace and an attacking mentality.
The constant attacking paid off in the 33rd minute when sophomore Bethany Coons (Union, Mo.) netted her first career goal, slotting a rebounded shot perfectly into the top corner of the net. Junior Jessica Johnson was credited with an assist on the play as her initial attempt struck the crossbar and fell to Coons' feet.
The game tightened up in the second half, though Mizzou still dominated offensively.
In the 85th minute, freshman Sarah Luebbert (Jefferson City, Mo.) secured the win for the Tigers. She ran onto a long pass from senior Melanie Donaldson (Florissant, Mo.) in stride, and chipped a shot over the outstretched hands of the Wildcat keeper. It was Luebbert's sixth goal of the season, giving her a team-high 15 points on the year. It was Donaldson's first assist of the 2016 season.
Mizzou sophomore keeper Kelsey Dossey (Plainfield, Ind.) notched her second clean sheet of the season and was forced to make just one save on the night.
With the win, the Tigers move to 2-1-0 in SEC play, and now boast a 6-1 home record.
Mizzou returns to the pitch on Sunday, Sept. 25 as the team hosts Mississippi State at 1 p.m.
