Game Recap: Soccer |

@MizzouSoccer Outlasts Illinois, 3-2 in OT

Donaldson scores the game-winner on a penalty kick in OT

COLUMBIA, Mo. – In an exhilarating game which needed overtime to decide the outcome, Mizzou Soccer senior midfielder Melanie Donaldson (Florissant, Mo.) ultimately scored the golden goal in the 96th minute to defeat Illinois, 3-2. With the win, the Tigers improve to 2-1-0, while Illinois falls to 2-1-0.

In an exciting first half, Illinois struck first with a counterattack goal from Patricia George in the 15th minute. George dribbled down the left side, made a move to the middle and blasted an unassisted shot into the upper left corner.

Mizzou equalized in the 40th minute off of a perfectly executed corner kick. Senior defender Erin Webb (Castle Rock, Colo.) lofted a perfect ball into the box, which found the head of freshman midfielder Grace Kitts (Leawood, Kan.), who directed the ball to the foot of redshirt sophomore midfielder Lauren Gaston (Los Angeles, Calif.). Gaston promptly took the headed pass and snuck the ball under the outstretched arms of the Illinois keeper.

Mizzou then netted the go-ahead-goal in the 78th minute. Junior midfielder Kaitlyn Clark (Liberty, Mo.) played a perfect low cross from the right side of the field, where freshman forward Sarah Luebbert (Jefferson City, Mo.) was able to get on the end of it, sliding the ball past the Illini keeper.  The goal was Luebbert's second goal of the season.

Illinois was not done though, as the Fighting Illini rallied to tie the game back up in the 83rd minute. Illinois defender Hope D'Addario passed a mishandled ball onto forward Kara Marbury, who leveled the game with an easy toe-tap into the back of the net.

After the score was tied at the end of regulation, the game headed to extra time, where the Tigers ultimately outlasted the Illini with the goal from Donaldson. Mizzou continued its offensive dominance, producing 24 shots in the game, and putting 11 of those shots on goal.  The Tigers shots per game average of 23.75 through three games is good for 12th nationally.

Mizzou will again take the field again Sunday against Colorado. Kickoff from Walton Stadium is slated for 7 p.m. CT.
