STARKVILLE, Miss. – Mizzou Baseball dropped its series finale at No. 3 Mississippi State, 3-1, on Saturday afternoon (May 7) at Dudy Noble Field. The loss drops Mizzou to 24-25 and 7-17 in SEC play while MSU improves to 33-14-1. Mizzou had the bases loaded with no outs in the fifth and got only one run and then nearly tied the game in the sixth on a Shane Benes (Town & Country, Mo.) double, but Brett Bond (St. Louis, Mo.) was gunned at the plate attempting to score from first on a perfect relay play from the Bulldogs. But those were the best chances for Mizzou as Mississippi State completed the sweep.
Mizzou freshman LHP Michael Plassmeyer (St. Louis, Mo.) took the loss after going 4.2 innings in relief, scattering just six hits with a career-high six strikeouts. He allowed two runs (both earned) and walked two batters. Daniel Brown earned the win for Mississippi State, tossing 4.0 shutout innings, scattering just three hits with three strikeouts. Reid Humphreys picked up the save, his sixth of the year.
Mississippi State got on the board in the first inning as three consecutive one-out hits led to a run, culminating with Gavin Collins' RBI single. Mizzou starter Cole Bartlett (Williamsburg, Ind.) minimized the damage by getting the next two hitters. MSU then put two men on in the second and a runner attempted to score on an infield hit, but a heads-up play by Zach Lavy (Auxvasse, Mo.) at first gunned the runner at the plate for the third out.
Head coach Tim Jamieson then went to the bullpen for the third inning and brought in Plassmeyer and MSU tagged him for two consecutive singles to open the frame, albeit one was a bloop to center off the glove of a sliding Jake Ring (Ingleside, Ill.). But Plassmeyer picked up a strikeout, a groundout and a huge strikeout looking to get out of the jam.
Plassmeyer then got a nice 4-6-3 double play to get through the fourth, erasing a hit batter. Mizzou then got on the board in the top of the fifth inning as Ryan Howard (St. Charles, Mo.) reached on an error to with the bases loaded and two outs to score a run. Mizzou had the bases loaded with no outs but came away with just the lone run thanks to MSU's defense.
Mizzou nearly tied the game in the top of the sixth inning as Benes ripped a double down the left field line. Bond attempted to score from first but was gunned by a fraction of a second on a beautiful 7-6-2 relay to keep the score 2-1 in favor of MSU.
The Bulldogs then tacked on insurance in the seventh inning on a two-out RBI single Humphreys. He then came on for the ninth and closed the game out for his sixth save.
Mizzou has next midweek off for final on campus before hosting Georgia in a three-game series, beginning at 6 p.m. Friday.
