New short game area installed at Old Hawthorne for the Mizzou Men’s and Women’s Golf programs
COLUMBIA, Mo. - Mizzou Men's and Women's Golf and friends of the two programs dedicated the Robbins Family Short Range on Friday, April 29, with the new chipping and pitching area sitting adjacent to the Walsworth Family Golf Center at The Club at Old Hawthorne.
Mizzou's golf programs thanked area businessman Ray Robbins, whose generous support helped make the short range a reality, along with support from Director of Athletics Mack Rhoades and landscape work provided by Mizzou's sports turf and grounds department.
"Our program's facilities rank among the best in the country, and we have supporters like Ray Robbins to thank for that," head men's golf coach Mark Leroux said. "Through his continued generosity, our student-athletes have yet another avenue to be able to sharpen their games. Our program cannot thank Ray and his family enough for their support."
The Robbins Family Short Range will allow Mizzou's golfers to individualize their training and practice sessions, providing a likely boost to Mizzou's tournament scores in the future.
"Ray was instrumental in getting this put in place for us," head women's golf coach Stephanie Priesmeyer said. "We've added three putting greens, bunkers and short game targets, all something our kids will really benefit from. Anytime you can expand your facilities and give us more space to spread out, it's huge. We'll be able to be much more creative with our practices now."
Included in the dedication ceremony was a lesson in golf from Mizzou alum and PGA Tour professional Stan Utley. The two-time All-American and University of Missouri Athletics Hall of Famer mixed humor with outstanding instruction for the gathered crowd. Utley has regularly been recognized as one of America's top golf instructors by Golf Digest.
