Tigers finish ahead of four Top 50-ranked squads in Awendaw, S.C.
AWENDAW, S.C. - Mizzou Men's Golf closed its regular season with a sixth-place showing (284-289-295 -- 868) at The Hootie at Bulls Bay on Tuesday, April 5, at the Bulls Bay Golf Club. The Tigers (+4) registered their fifth Top 6 tournament finish of the season, gaining momentum for the postseason by besting top competition from around the country. Head coach Mark Leroux's group outshot four Top 50-ranked squads at Bulls Bay, finishing ahead of No. 20 Duke (+6), No. 45 Kansas (+7), No. 37 N.C. State (+8) and No. 31 Kentucky (+19).
Junior Euan Walker (Troon, Scotland) led the Tigers at the Hootie, shooting a 1-over-par. His three-round score of 217 (70-74-73) gave him a share of 19th place and sole possession of first among his fellow Tiger golfers for the second time this season. His score was helped by the 70 he shot in the first round, which was his fourth round under-par for 2015-16.
Following just one stroke behind Walker was fellow junior Linus Lilliedahl (Sandviken, Sweden), who posted a 2-over-par tournament which was good enough to tie for 26th place. Like Walker, Lilliedahl shot his lowest round in the first round (71-73-74 -- 218), which ties him with Walker with four rounds under-par for the campaign.
The third-best finisher for Mizzou was sophomore Hayden Buckley (Belden, Miss.), who shot 219 (69-77-73) for the tournament, a stroke off of Lilliedahl. Buckley's first round 69 was a low for any Tiger at the Hootie, and by finishing third on the team, Buckley avoided falling out of the Top 3 Mizzou golfers at any event all season long.
Following Buckley were the Echelmeier Brothers, who both finished at 5-over-par. For freshman Matt Echelmeier (Columbia, Mo.), the effort (76-70-75 -- 221) closed a promising initial collegiate campaign. Senior Will Echelmeier (Columbia, Mo.) competed in his first event of the season for the Tigers (74-72-75 -- 221).
Leroux's squad next heads to the SEC Championship, which runs April 15-17, in St. Simons Island, Ga. The Tigers and the rest of their league counterparts will play on the Seaside Course at Sea Island Golf Club. Learn more about the event here.
