ULAANBAATAR, Mongolia – Mizzou Wrestling junior J'den Cox (Columbia, Mo.) is set to represent Team USA in the Olympic Games World Qualifying Tournament on April 23-24 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. In order to qualify for the Summer Olympics Games in Rio de Janiero, Brazil, later this summer, Cox must finish the tournament in the top three of his weight class, freestyle 86 kg/189 lbs.
Assistant Coach Joe Johnston has made the trip to Mongolia to accompany Cox throughout the Qualifying Tournament.
Cox is one of nine wrestlers from Team USA who will compete in Mongolia for a spot in the Rio 2016 Summer Olympic Games, joining four women freestyle wrestlers, three Greco-Roman wrestlers, and one other men's freestyle wrestler. The Mongolia Qualifying Tournament is the third stage of Olympic Qualification, with Team USA qualifying nine of 18 possible weight classes so far.
Men's freestyle competitors are scheduled to compete on Sunday, April 24, beginning with the qualification rounds at 9 a.m. and the finals round at 6 p.m. local time. Mongolia is 14 hours ahead of the Central Standard time zone, meaning Cox is scheduled to wrestle on Saturday at 7 p.m. for the qualification round and 4 a.m. on Sunday for the finals round.
If Cox fails to qualify for the Summer Olympics in Mongolia, he will have one more chance to qualify at the second Olympic Games World Qualifying Tournament, set for May 6-8 in Instanbul, Turkey.
United World Wrestling is expected to carry a live web stream, along with live results on their website, UnitedWorldWrestling.org.
