@MIZ_TrackField Closes Florida Relays with School Record

GAINESVILLE, Fl. – Relays and field events highlighted the final day of competition for the Tigers as they closed out the three-day Florida Relays weekend on Saturday (April 2). The teams depart Gainesville with 13 PR's, 10 All-Time Top Ten marks, and two new school records in the women's 4x400m relay and 200m dash.
Relays ruled the day on the track, as the Tigers fielded teams in the 4x100m, 4x200m, 4x400m, and the sprint and distance medleys. Among the noteworthy performances out of the day was certainly the women's 4x400m relay, as they broke their second consecutive school record this season. The Tigers qualified for Saturday's final Friday afternoon, crossing a second outside of their previous record in 3:39.05. They dropped that record time by nearly three seconds, as the squad of freshman Maya Cody, junior Valerie Thames, junior LaQuisha Jackson, and senior Ayo Adewole crossed in 3:35.97 to take second in the field.
"The girls ran really well today," Assistant Coach Carjay Lyles said. "We have goals to continue to take the school record down as we progress toward the championship part of the season, and we're able to utilize these meets to find our best opportunities for proper legs and order for when it really counts. I can't express how great is has been having those young ladies battle for their spot on a highly competitive relay. It's helping us continue to push the time lower each week. We're already within a second of what we ran at indoor SEC's, which was our program's best time ever, so I'm optimistic about what the right four ladies in the right order can do in the coming weeks."
Also among the noteworthy performances out of the weekend was the women's 4x100m relay, whose 45.48 finish earned the squad a No. 3 slot on the All-Time Top Ten. The team of freshman Maya Cody, junior LaQuisha Jackson, and seniors Alyssa Felton and Jacqueline Obi clocked the fastest 4x100m time since 1988, becoming the first team since 2014 to crack into the All-Time Top Ten.
The men's and women's DMR's also had good showings, each finishing in the top five of their respective fields. On the women's side, the squad of sophomore Karissa Schweizer, junior Erika Lark, sophomore Valeska Halamicek and junior Teylar Adelsberger closed in third overall with a final time of 11:36.66. On the men's side, senior Will Crocker, freshman Matt Ludwig, senior Sam Dickerson, and freshman Thomas George battled it out with a tight lead pack, finally crossing in second overall in 8:51.33.
Saturday also marked the final competitions at the Embry-Riddle Spikes Classic in Daytona Beach. The contingent of Tigers departed that competition with event wins in three of their four competitions, as junior Danielle Williams, freshman Rebecca Keating and junior Ahren Bohanan all led the fields in their respective events.
#MIZTF FULL WEEKEND RECAP
It was certainly an exciting weekend for junior LaQuisha Jackson, who clocked through with two individual PR's, two new All-Time Top Ten marks, and two new school records throughout the three days of competition. First up for Jackson was Friday's 100m dash, where her PR of 11.47 solidified her in the No. 3 slot in the All-Time Top Ten list. She followed that performance up with a huge PR in the 200m dash, cruising through in 23.10 to drop her own school record (23.52) by nearly 0.50-seconds. That 200m dash time also qualifies her for the U.S. Olympic Trials in July.
"LaQuisha had a real coming out party this weekend," Lyles said. "Her open events were major confidence boosters at this time of the season, and if she stays healthy and distraction-free, she'll continue to represent Missouri with outstanding performances. It's been a long road to this point and I'm excited she is starting to see her hard work, focus, and sacrifices paying off. She's been a true example of determination and has made the sprints group better with her effort and hard work. Seeing her growth over the past four years has been a joy to watch, and she is just scratching the surface of her capabilities."
Record book performances continued to drop for Jackson on Saturday, as she helped guide the women's 4x100m relay team to a No. 3 All-Time finish (45.48). Her weekend finally concluded on Saturday evening with a new 4x400m relay record of 3:35.97. Jackson has now been a member of all three of the outdoor school record 4x400m relay teams. Jackson sits within the top 5 of the most recent national rankings for the 200m dash, and is in the top 20 for the 100m dash.
Senior Markesh Woodson made his debut in the 100m dash, crossing in 10.34, one of the top ten times yet this season according to the most recent USTFCCCA rankings.
Sophomore Karissa Schweizer opened up her outdoor campaign on Friday afternoon with a PR effort in the 1500m run. She placed 12th in the competition with a final time of 4:23.11, the seventh-fastest time in Mizzou history.
Junior Teylar Adelsberger made her 3000m steeplechase debut this season on Friday night, dropping nearly 30-seconds off of her previous PR (10.51.91) with a 10:24.52 finish. That crossing, good for a fourth-place finish in the field, is the third-fastest performance in school history and puts her within the top-ten of the most-recent USTFCCCA rankings.
In the pole vault, freshman Bri Gibbs made her mark in the Mizzou Record Books, hitting the tenth-best bar in school history on Friday with her 3.67 (12-0.50) finish.
A trio of Tigers also made the All-Time Top Ten in the throws events, starting with freshman Gabi Jacobs, who had a breakthrough performance in the discus on Friday. Her top mark of 50.67m (166-3) puts her alongside Krishna Lee at No. 5 in the Mizzou record books.
Freshman Rebecca Keating also made her way into the All-Time Top Ten for the first time, tossing the eighth-best mark in the women's hammer throw on Friday. Her top throw of 56.87m (186-7) earned her eighth in the field.
Junior Reinhard Van Zyl rounded out the All-Time Top Ten performers in the field for the weekend, taking second in the javelin competition with a top mark of 72.61m (238-3). That moves the Tiger newcomer up into the No. 3 spot in the record books for the event.
HEAR FROM COACH HALTER
On the weekend's performances...
"We're obviously really appreciative of Florida for putting on a great meet, it's been a long time since we've been back here. It was a terrific competition from across the country, we got to see a lot of SEC folks. The team's in great shape, they rose to the occasion and competed like they have all season. They got in there, competed hard, worked to beat people, and when you do that great things are going to happen, and they're doing that. Just terrific efforts. The results speak for themselves with the school records, top ten lists, personal bests all over the place, it's really hard to keep track of everything. We're really pleased now, moving into April. I think all the coaches are feeling good across the event areas, you know we still have a lot of work to do but I think the athletes are preparing well and putting in the effort. We're looking forward to getting on the road again next week for Georgia."
On the Georgia Spec Town Invitational...
"We'll see some of the same SEC counterparts as this week at Georgia, and we'll see Duke and Louisville from the ACC and Wisconsin from the Big Ten. It'll be a fun track meet."
The Tigers will have another quick turnaround this week, as they travel to Athens, Georgia, for the Spec Town Invitational (April 8-9). For the latest on Mizzou Track & Field, stay tuned to MUTigers.com and follow the team on Twitter @MIZ_TrackField.
