Santos Earns Fourth Win over Ranked Opponent in @MizzouTennis’ Loss to Kentucky

Mizzou finishes regular season against Mississippi State and Ole Miss on Thursday and Saturday, respectively
COLUMBIA, Mo. – No. 60 Mizzou Tennis (15-10, 2-9 SEC) fell to No. 21 Kentucky (16-7, 5-6 SEC), 4-1, on Sunday afternoon at the Mizzou Tennis Complex. The match was designated Breast Cancer Awareness day, with former Tiger Alex Clark on hand to provide the first serve in honor of her mother.
Kentucky won the doubles point following wins on courts one and two. In singles play, junior Bea Machado Santos (Lisbon, Portugal) secured the only win on the day for Mizzou, knocking off #56 Justina Mikulskyte for her fourth win over a ranked opponent this season. Santos, at the No. 1 position, cruised to the straight-sets win, 6-3, 6-3, to put Mizzou on the scoreboard. After falling 6-3 in the first set, senior Kelli Hine (New Braunfels, Texas) came back from down 5-3 against Aldila Sutjiadi to win the second set, 7-6, to force a third set. In the grueling third set, Sutjiadi came out on top, 6-4, clinching the match for Kentucky.
In matches which were not finished, junior Cassidy Spearman (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) and sophomore Clare Raley (Atlanta, Ga.) each picked up set victories. Spearman dropped the first set, 6-2, then came back and won the second set, 6-2, against Mami Adachi. Raley won the first set, 6-3, over Kirsten Lewis and trailed 4-2 in the second set when play was stopped.
Mizzou will finish the regular season with two home matches next week, first against Mississippi State on Thursday at 5 p.m. (CT), followed by Ole Miss on Saturday at Noon (CT).
