Cassidy Spearman and Brittany Lashway pick up a doubles win over a ranked team
COLUMBIA, Mo. – In its second to last match of the regular season, No. 65 Mizzou Tennis (15-11, 2-10 SEC) dropped a conference match to Southeastern Conference foe No. 24 Mississippi State (25-7, 6-6 SEC), 4-1, on Thursday at the Mizzou Tennis Complex. Mizzou jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point, but Mississippi State responded with four wins in singles play to clinch the match.
In doubles play, Mizzou earned victories at the No. 2 and 3 positions. Senior Kelli Hine (New Braunfels, Texas) and sophomore Clare Raley (Atlanta, Ga.) earned the first win of the day for Mizzou, besting Jasmine Lee and Louis Ronaldson, 6-2. On court three, junior Cassidy Spearman (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) and junior Brittany Lashway (Bradenton, Fla.) picked up their first win over a ranked team this season, defeating the No. 83 ranked team of Georgiana Patrasc and Anastasia Rentouli, 6-4. The win clinched the doubles point for Mizzou, giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead. The duo now owns three SEC wins in doubles play, a team high.
In singles play, Mississippi State won singles matches on courts one, two, three, and five to clinch the match. After being down in the second set, Hine fought back to tie the score at 5-5 on court two against No. 35 Georgiana Patrasc, but the ranked Bulldog ended up taking the set, 7-5, and the match in straight sets. On court six, Raley picked up a set victory in the second set, 6-2, over Jennifer Brown, before play was stopped due to the match being clinched.
Mizzou will next host Ole Miss on Saturday for senior day, honoring the Tiger career of Kelli Hine. First serve from the Mizzou Tennis Complex is slated for Noon (CT). Mizzou Network will carry a live stream of the match.
