#21 @MizzouWBB Drops Defensive Battle at #11 Mississippi State

Tigers pulled within one point with 7:05 remaining
STARKVILLE, Miss. – No. 21 Mizzou Women's Basketball (18-6, 5-6) fell 52-42 to No. 11 Mississippi State (21-4, 8-3) on Sunday afternoon at Humphrey Coliseum. Sophie Cunningham (Columbia, Mo.) led the Tigers with 13 points, including eight in the fourth quarter. Jordan Frericks (Quincy, Ill.) recorded her 23rd career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Mizzou's defense held the Bulldogs scoreless for the game's first 3:37 before Mississippi State connected on six consecutive shots during an 11-0 run. At the end of the first, MSU led 17-6.
In the second quarter, Mizzou went on a went on a 7-0 run over 4:39 and held Mississippi State scoreless for 5:05 as the Tigers pulled within four at 19-15. Mizzou outscored MSU 12-6 during the second period and trailed 23-18 at halftime. Frericks led the Tigers with six first-half points while Cunningham added five.
The Bulldogs extended the lead to 35-27 at the end of the third quarter after outscoring Mizzou 12-9. Of the 21 combined points scored in the third period, 14 came from the foul line.
Mizzou made it a 1-point game at 35-34 with 7:05 remaining on a dazzling reverse layup by Cunningham but that was as close as the Tigers would get. MSU closed the game on a 7-0 run and converted five of their last seven field goal attempts.
For the game, Mizzou shot 32 percent (14-for-44) from the floor and 75 percent (12-for-16) from the free throw line. MSU shot 33 percent (18-for-55) from the field and 68 percent (15-for-22) at the foul line.
Morgan William led the Bulldogs with a game-high 17 points. Victoria Vivians added 13 points.
The Tigers return to Mizzou Arena on Thursday for a 7 p.m. CT tipoff vs. Alabama. The game will be available on SEC Network Plus/WatchESPN.
