Meet Schedule // Heat Sheets (Friday) // Heat Sheets (Saturday)
COLUMBIA, Mo. - After taking a weekend off from competition, Mizzou Track & Field is back on the road, heading to Lincoln, Neb., for the Husker Invitational. The two-day meet, spanning Friday (February 5) and Saturday (February 6) is the second big test of the season for the Tigers, as they take on an impressive field, including six of the top 25-ranked teams in the current NCAA rankings. Events at the Bob Devaney Sports Center will begin Friday evening for the black and gold, and will continue through Saturday afternoon.
THE MEET
Among the high-caliber field are six teams currently ranked in the top 25 of the USTFCCCA (U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association) national rankings. On the men's side, No. 3 Texas, No. 14 Texas Tech., No. 15 Nebraska, and No. 24 Kansas State are all set to compete, while the women's field will feature No. 5 Texas and No. 6 Kansas State.
A highlight program of Saturday's events will be aired on the Big Ten Network at noon on Saturday, February 13.
FRESHMEN CONTINUE TO SHINE
Freshman Kahmari Montgomery is set to take the blocks for the first time since his stellar school record run in the 400m dash during the Rod McCravy Memorial Meet. His 47.33 finish at the Rod McCravy Memorial bested the 1988 record held by Rob Collier.
A trio of freshmen are also looking at school record marks, having earned the No. 2 marks in school history in their respective events throughout the early part of the season. Charles Graham, Jr., hit the second-fastest 60m hurdles time in school history right off the bat, crossing in 7.99 to sit within a tenth of a second of Nick Adcock's 2010 record of 7.92.
Maya Cody also put her name near the top of the record boards early on, timing through the 60m dash in 7.54 to sit just behind junior LaQuisha Jackson in the 60m dash. She will compete in the 200m dash on Saturday, an event in which she holds the No. 7 time in school history (24.89).
Rounding out the list of freshmen who have higlighted the season thus far is Matthew Ludwig, who has served as on the headliners of the season, steadily climbing through the All-Time Top Ten lists for the men's pole vault. His 5.30m (17-4.50) performance from the Missouri Invitational three weeks ago puts him just off Brian Hancock's top bar from 2011 (5.38m // 17-7.75).
TIGERS IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS
Heading into the fourth meet of the season, several Tigers have found themselves in the top 30 of the national rankings in their respective events. Leading this group is senior Markesh Woodson, who is currently ranked 12th in the country in the 60m dash (6.66). Also landing in the top 20 is freshman Matthew Ludwig in the men's pole vault (5.30m // 17-4.50).
Sophomores Karissa Schweizer and John Warren both hold top 25 marks in their respective events. Warren, the returning USATF Junior Champion in the outdoor triple jump, hit the No. 23 mark in the country thus far this season at the Rod McCravy Memorial Meet two weeks, landing at 15.73m (51-7.25) in his first full approach of the season. Schweizer, who also earned herself a podium finish during the 2015 USATF Junior Championships (third - 3000m run), is currently ranked 24th for the mile after her 4:42.15 PR performance at Rod McCravy.
Finally, freshman Kahmari Montgomery's school record run of 47.33 at the Rod McCravy Memorial Meet, his first 400m dash of the season, has him at 30th in the current national rankings.
EARLY-SEASON CONFERENCE RECOGNITIONS
Three Tigers have landed on the SEC weekly awards list in the early-portion of the season, adding to the list of honors quickly accumulating around this freshman class. First up was freshmen Maya Cody and Matthew Ludwig, who earned the first SEC Freshmen of the Week nods of the season after their stellar openings. Freshman Jamie Kempfer followed suit two weeks ago, earning the Freshman of the Week recognition after posting a second consecutive event win at the Rod McCravy Memorial in the 5000m run (17:11.87).
HEAR FROM COACH HALTER...
"We are looking forward to competing at Nebraska this weekend and reconnecting with a traditional venue for indoor track and field and Mizzou. The Husker Invitational has a rich tradition and we are looking forward to another high-caliber meet," Head Coach Brett Halter said. "Coming off a bye week, I know our athletes are excited to get back into competition. Now a few weeks out from the championship portion of the season, we will begining the sharpening process. Coach Pepin and his staff always run a first-class meet, and will certainly provide us with that championship setting."
