Fuentes has starred at setter for Puerto Rican U18 and U20 National Teams
COLUMBIA, Mo. - Mizzou Volleyball completed its impressive 2017 recruiting class on Tuesday with the signing of setter Andrea Fuentes (San Juan, Puerto Rico), as announced by head coach Wayne Kreklow.
"We're very excited and pleased to be able to add Andrea to our Mizzou Volleyball family," Coach Kreklow said. "She is not only an outstanding player, but an even better person! The fact that she was named the captain of the U20 Puerto Rican National Volleyball Team at this past summer's NORCECA Tournament speaks volumes about her talent as a player and her leadership skills. Andrea is one of those rare players that has the ability to make everyone around her better. We are very excited about Andrea and can't wait to get her here beginning in 2017."
"I wanted to go somewhere where I could see myself living comfortably," Fuentes said. "I was looking for a place where I could further both my academic and athletic careers as best as I could. There was no doubt that Mizzou was the best fit for me. The coaching staff, the team members and the different people I met on campus were all very welcoming. I heard happy experiences from the current players and I could ultimately see myself at Mizzou for the next four years. The Mizzou Volleyball experience was full of positive vibes and positive attitudes. I can't wait to be a part of it!"
Before ultimately picking Mizzou, Fuentes also considered Arkansas and Notre Dame.
The past three years, Fuentes has competed and excelled with multiple Puerto Rican National Teams. Recently, the San Juan native won "Best Setter" honors at the 2016 NORCECA Championship. Additionally, she was named team captain of the Puerto Rican Youth National Team.
In 2015, Fuentes competed with the U20 Puerto Rican National Team, who claimed a bronze medal at the AAU International Division. Two years ago, she also played for Puerto Rico's U18 Youth National Team. The team took fourth place at both the 2014 NORCECA U18 Championships and 2015 U18 Pan-American Cup.
Fuentes is the third and final member of the Class of 2017 recruiting class. She joins fellow future Tigers in Dariana Hollingsworth-Santana (San Juan, Puerto Rico) and Leketor Member-Meneh (St. Louis, Mo.).
