The second winningest Tiger in program history posted a 3-1 record on the day to capture third-place
KHASAVYURT, RUSSIA – Mizzou Wrestling alum and two-time NCAA All-American Alan Waters (Kansas City, Mo.) captured the 57 kg/125.5 lbs. bronze medal in men's freestyle wrestling at the Intercontinental Cup on Saturday in Russia. Waters was one of seven American wrestlers to compete in the two-day event, joining forces with NCAA wrestling standouts Alex Dieringer, Nick Gwiazdowski and Nico Megaludis.
The Missouri Wrestling Foundation product went 3-1 on the day and defeated Tamirlan Karaev (Russia), 16-10, in the medal round to claim bronze. Waters beat Parviz Ibrahimov (Azerbaijan) in the opening round, 9-7, before falling to Magomedrasul Idrisov (Russia) in the second round. Waters defeated David R. (Poland) in the repechage via technical fall, 10-0, to advance to the medal round.
"He (Waters) wrestled very tough and stingy in each bout and seemed to get better as the tournament went on," said U.S. coach Eric Guerrero in a press release from U.S.A. Wrestling. "A bronze medal from Khasavyurt in his first international outing was great."
A four-time NCAA qualifier, two-time NCAA All-American and three-time conference champion, Waters recorded 136 wins in his collegiate career with the Tigers, the second-most wins in program history. Waters also ranks second in Tiger history for career technical falls (17), third in winning percentage among wrestler with over 100 wins (.907, 136-14) and eighth in career falls (27).
