Second Half Comeback Falls Short for @MizzouHoops vs. Mississippi State

Tigers drop 76-62 result to Bulldogs despite 16 points from Wright

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Mizzou Men's Basketball (8-13, 1-7) fell to Mississippi State (9-11, 2-6) Saturday, 76-62, at Mizzou Arena. The Tigers cut the Bulldogs' lead to 10 points twice during the second half, thanks to a 15-3 run, but were unable to erase a 17-point first half deficit.

Sophomore guard Namon Wright (Los Angeles, Calif.) led the Tigers with 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting (50 percent) and 3-of-3 shooting from the free throw line. Wright also led the team in rebounds, grabbing a career-high nine boards.

Two other Tigers joined Wright in double-digits, including freshman guard Terrence Phillips (Orange County, Calif.) with 10 points, and sophomore forward Jakeenan Gant (Springfield, Ga.) with 11. Gant's 11 points matched a season-high, the third time this season he has reached 11.

Phillips' play was key to the strong second half effort from the Tigers, recording nine points, two assists, three steals with zero turnovers after the halftime break. Phillips finished the game with four steals, which tied a season-high. Phillips also set a new career-high in minutes played, playing in 37 of 40 minutes.

Gant provided a spark off the bench for the Tigers in the first half, shooting a perfect 2-of-2 from the field. He also blocked a shot and showed fantastic hustle when he saved a ball from going out of bounds, which lead to a field goal for Wright.

Mizzou outscored the Bulldogs, 42-39 in the second half, and shot 45 percent from the field (14-of-31). The Tigers converted chances at the free throw line, hitting on 12-of-13 shots from the line. Senior forward Ryan Rosburg (Chesterfield, Mo.) was a perfect 4-of-4 from the line in the half, the first time this season Rosburg has been perfect from the line in a game when taking multiple attempts.

The Tigers take the court again Wednesday, Feb. 3, against Ole Miss at Mizzou Arena. The game is set to start at 8 p.m. CT and can be seen live on the SEC Network.
