Felton Clocks School Record at Missouri Invitational

COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Tigers had their first home meet of 2016 on Friday (January 15), hosting ten schools at the 30th running of the Missouri Invitational. Both the men and women maintained the momentum generated during the season debut the weekend prior, earning one new school record mark, two All-Time Top Ten marks, 13 PR's, and eight event wins.
"We were just building off of the momentum from last weekend. We've really been working the freshmen up, and the team has really been working hard the last 14 days getting back into everything and were working hard through this meet. Yet, we've had remarkable performances again for the second week in a row," Head Coach Brett Halter said. "Thrilling for Alyssa Felton to tie the school record, and to see a freshman [Matthew Ludwig] jumping at Brian Hancock's school record which, keep in mind, that's an All-American mark that he's taking good attempts at. Really pleased with where we are across the board, and we're looking forward to tackling the bulk of our schedule as we head into the end of January and in early February."
The day had an exciting start, courtesy of senior Alyssa Felton, who timed through with a school record-tying performance in the 60m hurdles preliminary heats. She crossed the line in 8.53, to stand in the company of Mizzou greats Teri LeBlanc and Janay Woolridge at the top of the event's record board.
Junior Valerie Thames also moved up the All-Time Top Ten list in the 60m hurdles, hitting 8.62 to move into the No. 5 slot in school history. Thames entered the meet with the sixth-fastest time in Mizzou history after she clocked through in 8.64 at last week's Border Battle.
In the field events, freshman Matthew Ludwig found himself as one of the headliners yet again, continuing his climb through the Mizzou pole vault record board with his second consecutive event win. Ludwig kicked off his career as a Tiger last week at the Border Battle with the third-best mark in school history, 5.10m (16-8.75). He eclipsed that mark this week, closing the competition with a final bar of 5.30m (17-4.50). He took charge of the competition from the start, entering at 4.75m (15-7) and cruising through the first three bars before finding himself alone in the competition at 5.20m (17-0.75). With that mark he tied Tom Jordan as the No. 2 vaulter in school history before he solidified himself in that second spot with a final bar of 5.30m (17-4.50). The current record stands at 5.38m (17-7.75) and has been held by Brian Hancock, a five-time All-American, since 2011.
Other highlights include a second consecutive 400m dash win for freshman Maya Cody, who was awarded the SEC Freshman of the Week honor on Tuesday (January 12) after she hit All-Time Top Ten marks in both the 60m (7.54) and 400m (55.56) dashes. She was just off of those PR's this week with a 7.62 finish in the 60m dash for second in the field, and a 55.76 crossing in the 400m.
Freshmen Kahmari Montgomery and Charles Graham, Jr., both clocked through with winning efforts in the 200m dash and 60m hurdles, respectively. Montgomery crossed in 21.97 for his first 200m result in the black and gold after he clocked the ninth-fastest 60m dash time the week prior (6.89). Charles Graham, Jr., returned to the 60m hurdles competition after hitting the No. 2 time school history at the season-opening Border Battle (7.99). He earned his first winning finish as a Tiger with an 8.04 finish.
The Tigers also clocked a few wins in the mid-distance and distance events, with sophomore Mark Sheridan and junior Drew White taking first place on the men's side in the 800m and 3000m runs, respectively. For the women, it was senior Sandrae Farquharson who crossed with the fastest time in the 800m run, while sophomore Becca Batliner claimed the win in the 3000m run.
The Tigers will be back at it next weekend with the Rod McCravy Memorial Meet in Lexington, Ky. (January 22-23). For the latest on Mizzou Track & Field, stay tuned to MUTigers.com and follow the team on Twitter @MIZ_TrackField.
