COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Mizzou senior diver Clark Thomas (Olathe, Kan.) earned his fourth-consecutive NCAA Championships bid after placing third on 3-meter during day one action Monday at the NCAA Zone D Diving Championships in College Station, Texas. The 2016 NCAA Men's Division I Swimming and Diving Championships take place March 23-26 in Atlanta, Ga.
The top seven finishers in the men's 3-meter competition earned NCAA Championships bids. Thomas, who sat in 10th following preliminary competition, used a season-best total of 429.95 in finals to jump to third with a two-round total of 796.70. The bid marked the senior's fourth-consecutive NCAA Championships berth in four tries as a Tiger. As a sophomore in 2014, Thomas placed ninth on 3-meter and 14th on 1-meter at NCAAs to earn two honorable mention All-America honors.
Also advancing to finals on 3-meter for the men were freshman Kyle Goodwin (Aurora, Colo.) and sophomores Hunter Fritter (Houston, Texas) and Elliot Cecil (Fishers, Ind.). Goodwin missed an NCAA bid by two places after finishing ninth with a combined prelims and finals total of 740.50. Fritter took 17th with 648.80, including a season-high six-round score of 336.00 in finals, while Cecil was 17th with a tally of 635.00.
Earlier in the day, sophomore Alexa Beckwith (Denver, Colo.) led the Mizzou women with a ninth-place showing on 1-meter with a total of 578.35. Additionally, sophomore Madeline McKernan (Montgomery, Texas) finished 20th (260.55), sophomore Kendra Kieser (Plano, Texas) 22nd (257.00) and freshman Payton Conrad (Omaha, Neb.) 24th (255.70).
Day two at the NCAA Zone D Diving Championships continue on Tuesday with women's 3-meter at 11 a.m. and men's 1-meter at 5:45 p.m.
