No. 16 South Carolina Sneaks Past @MizzouSoccer, 1-0

Redshirt sophomore keeper Kristen Rivers made four saves for the Tigers

COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Mizzou soccer team suffered a 1-0 loss to No. 16 South Carolina on Sunday, Sept. 20 at Walton Stadium. A crowd of 1,523 attended the match, the program's annual Pack and Park and Pink Out events. That marked the second crowed over 1,500 fans this season and the sixth-biggest attendance figure in program history.

With the loss, the Tigers fell to 3-3-3 overall and 1-1-0 in Southeastern Conference action, while the Gamecocks improved to 8-1-0 and 2-0-0.

Redshirt sophomore keeper Kristen Rivers (Lawrenceville, Ga.) earned her first career start in the match, allowing only the one goal and making four saves in net.

The Gamecocks scored the eventual game-winner with a breakaway chance in the 37th minute. Simone Wark got behind the Tiger defense to create a one-on-one opportunity against Rivers. The South Carolina player sent a low shot that beat Rivers for a 1-0 Gamecock advantage.

Only four minutes later, redshirt junior Jessica Herrman (Raytown, Mo.) volleyed a loose ball in the box toward a seemingly empty net. However, South Carolina's keeper recovered to make a body save on the ball and keep Mizzou off the scoreboard.

The Tiger offensive picked it up in the second half, outshooting the Gamecocks 6-3 in the frame. Missouri's best chance came on a 65th-minute header from sophomore Alli Magaletta (Chesterfield, Mo.), who sent a strong attempt toward the right post. Magaletta's shot beat the keeper but a South Carolina defender stationed on the goal line cleared the ball away.

The Gamecocks had an 11-10 shots advantage in the match, including a 5-4 edge in shots on goal, while the Tigers had seven corners to the Gamecocks' one.

Mizzou hits the road for a pair of away contests next weekend. The Tigers play at Kentucky on Friday, Sept. 25 at 7:30 p.m. ET (6:30 p.m. CT) before a match at Mississippi State on Sunday, Sept. 27 at 1 p.m. Both games will be broadcast live on SEC Network +.
