COLUMBIA, Mo. – Sophomores Savannah Trujillo (Kansas City, Mo.) and Alli Magaletta (Chesterfield, Mo.) scored the first two goals against the Auburn defense this season as Mizzou soccer team notched a 2-1 upset over the No. 9 and previously unbeaten Auburn Tigers in the Southeastern Conference opener Friday night at Walton Stadium. Mizzou improved to 3-1-3 overall and 1-0-0 in SEC action with the win, while Auburn fell to 6-1-0 and 0-1-0.
The win also marked Missouri's first win over a top-10 team since a 1-0 victory over No. 7 Florida on Sept. 29, 2013.
Trujillo capitalized on early Mizzou offensive pressure with her second tally of the season in the 17th minute. Sophomore Jessica Johnson (Los Angeles, Calif.) flicked a ball toward a sprinting Trujillo near the top of the box. Trujillo got behind the Auburn defense, took a touch, and beat the keeper with a left-footed strike to the lower right corner of the net for a 1-0 Missouri lead.
The home Tigers doubled their advantage in the 67th minute when Magaletta and senior Macee Blanchard (Fort Worth, Texas) combined for Mizzou's second goal of the game. Blanchard dribbled to the left endline and sent a laser of a cross to the far post. Magaletta ran onto the ball and headed a shot down and into the lower left netting for her first tally of the year. Blanchard was also credited with her first career assist on the play.
Auburn responded less than a minute later when Mizzou committed a foul in the box, sending Brooke Ramsier to the penalty spot. Mizzou freshman keeper Kelsey Dossey (Plainfield, Mo.) guessed correctly on the penalty but Ramsier's strike was too strong for the freshman to save to cut Missouri's lead to 2-1.
The visiting Tigers put the pressure on Mizzou's defense in the waning minutes but the backline held firm for the 2-1 Mizzou victory.
Missouri outshot Auburn 26-12 in the match, including a 10-2 edge in shots on goal.
Dossey was forced to made only one save in goal.
Mizzou returns to the pitch on Sunday, Sept. 13 when the Tigers conclude non-conference action with a home match against Nebraska at 1 p.m.
