Second Half Goal Lifts Indiana Past Mizzou, 1-0

Mizzou falls to 1-1-1 on the season

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Indiana used a goal early in the second half to lift the Hoosiers over the Mizzou soccer team in the Tigers' first match of the Boilermaker Challenge Cup Friday afternoon in West Lafayette, Indiana. Mizzou fell to 1-1-1 on the year with the loss, while Indiana improved to 1-1-1.

The Tigers dominated the early going and outshot the Hoosiers 8-4 in the opening 45 minutes but could not find the back of the net. A near-chance from freshman Bethany Coons (Union, Missouri) was the squad's best opportunity. Coons timed her run perfectly and got behind the Hoosier defense to get a cross from senior Macee Blanchard (Fort Worth, Texas). Coons took a dribble and unleashed a shot on net but the Indiana keeper came off her line and made a point-blank body save to keep the match scoreless.

In the 53rd minute, the Hoosiers made the most of a corner for the ultimate game-winner. Kayleigh Steigerwalt lofted the kick right in front of the net, where Marissa Borschke headed a shot past Mizzou freshman keeper Kelsey Dossey (Plainfield, Indiana).

Mizzou picked up its offensive pressure in the final 20 minutes and had several chances to tally the equalizer. Sophomore Jessica Johnson (Los Angeles, California) had two shots on goal in the last 10 minutes, including a left-footed change in the final minute, but Indiana's keeper stood tall to make the saves.

With three minutes remaining, freshman Amanda Shaw (Carmel, Indiana) received a pass from senior Reagan Russell (Sugar Land, Texas) and looked to have an open look on net. However the Indiana defense recovered as a Hoosier back stoned Shaw before she could unleash a shot.

The Tigers held a 13-12 shot advantage in the contest, while the two teams both had three corners on the day. Coons and Johnson each had three shots on goal.

Dossey made three saves in net for Missouri.

Mizzou returns to the pitch on Sunday, Aug. 30 as the team faces Purdue at 2 p.m. ET (1 p.m. CT) in West Lafayette, Ind.
