Mizzou and SMU Play to 1-1 Double-Overtime Draw

COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Mizzou soccer team earned a 1-1 double-overtime tie with SMU on Sunday afternoon at Walton Stadium.  Senior Candace Johnson netted the Tigers' goal on a first-half penalty kick.

Mizzou's record now stands at 1-0-1 on the year, while the Mustangs improved to 0-1-1.

Missouri outshot SMU 23-10, including a 5-0 edge in the overtime sessions, but could not manage to score the winner over the Mustangs. The Tigers also had a 6-3 edge in corners in the contest.

A header from redshirt senior Lauren Flynn seemed destined to give Mizzou an early advantage but her attempt off a corner bounced off the crossbar to keep the match level at 0-0 in the eighth minute. Three minutes later, junior Lauren Selaiden flicked a pass to redshirt junior Jessica Herrman, but Herrman's ensuing header soared just wide right of the net.

In the 34th minute, freshman Amanda Shaw was taken down in the box by a Mustang defender. Johnson calmly stepped to the spot and put her penalty shot over SMU's keeper for a 1-0 Mizzou advantage. The tally was the first of the year for Johnson, who now has five in her Tiger career.

A SMU goal in the 51st minute of action knotted the match at 1-1. Mustang Claire Oates headed a free kick from teammate Taylor Barg over Mizzou freshman keeper Kelsey Dossey and into the upper 90 for the equalizer.

The Tigers dominated play in the two overtime sessions, with shots from five different players, but were kept out of goal by SMU keeper Shannon Moroney.

Dossey made three saves in goal in 110 minutes of action.

Mizzou hits the road next weekend for the Boilermaker Challenge Cup in West Lafayette, Ind. The Tigers face Indiana on Friday, Aug. 28 at 3 p.m. CT and host Purdue on Sunday, Aug. 30 at 1 p.m. CT.
