COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Mizzou soccer team officially opened the 2015 season with a 2-0 win over TCU Friday night at Walton Stadium. Senior Reagan Russell (Sugar Land, Texas) and sophomore Savannah Trujillo (Kansas City, Mo.) found the back of the net, while the Tiger defense held the Horned Frogs to just four shots and one shot on goal in the match.
Freshman goalkeeper Kelsey Dossey (Plainfield, Ind.) earned her first career win and shutout as she stopped one shot in 90 minute of action.
Mizzou dominated play with a 24-4 edge in shots and a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.
After early pressure from the Tiger offense, Trujillo broke the scoreless tie in the 18th minute. The sophomore pounced on a loose ball in Mizzou's offensive third, dribbled toward the top of the box, cut to her right and unleashed a right-footed strike into the top of the net for a 1-0 Missouri lead.
Russell added the Tigers' second with great individual effort in the 53rd minute. In almost a mirror of Trujillo's goal, Russell made a run toward the box, cut to her left and sent a left-footed attempt at net. The shot hit in front of the TCU keeper and bounced into the lower left corner of the goal. Russell is coming off a career junior season in 2015, where she had personal bests of seven goals, four assists and 18 points.
Mizzou pestered the TCU defense with quality shots in the final 15 minutes but failed to add another goal to the scoreboard. The Horned Frogs keeper made a pair of one-handed jump saves at the crossbar to thwart attempts from freshmen Bethany Coons (Union, Mo.) and Amanda Shaw (Carmel, Ind.).
The Tigers return to the pitch on Sunday, Aug. 23 as the squad hosts SMU at 1 p.m. on SEC Network +.
