EUGENE, Ore. - Seven Tigers are in Eugene, Ore., this week to take on the NCAA Championships, set to begin on Wednesday (June 10) at historic Hayward Field. Qualification for the national championship meet is based on the top 12 finishers out of each event during the East and West Preliminary Rounds, which took place two weeks ago in Jacksonville, Fl., and Austin, Tx., respectively.
Senior Macauley Garton and freshman Alex Pascal will kick things off for the black and gold on Wednesday with the men's javelin competition at 5 p.m. PT. Garton, who already holds the distinction of being the third man in Mizzou history to qualify for the NCAA Championships in the javelin, now also joins Pascal as the first Mizzou male duo to ever qualify for the event at the national championship level.
Garton enters the weekend ranked fifth in the NCAA with his school record mark of 77.47m (254-2) from the SEC Championships last month. This is the second consecutive NCAA Championship meet for Garton, who earned his first All-American honor in 2014 after placing eighth overall. Garton was sixth out of the West Preliminary Round in Austin, Tx., two weeks ago, two spots behind Pascal who marked in with a PR of 70.30m (230-8) to secure his spot in Eugene this week.
Junior Markesh Woodson will also get his first taste of competition for the week on Wednesday, taking the blocks in the 100m dash semifinal at 5:16 p.m. PT. This week marks Woodson's return to the NCAA Outdoor Championships after he fell just short of qualifying in 2014. Woodson has had an exciting 2015, finishing as the indoor SEC runner-up in the 60m dash with a new school record of 6.58 before earning his third All-American honor at the indoor championship meet, placing fifth in the 60m dash. Woodson was 11th out of the West Preliminary Round, clocking through in 10.17 to secure his qualification.
Thursday's competition will be highlighted by the Tiger women, with seniors Katrine Haarklau, Kearsten Peoples, and Jill Rushin all lining up for their last NCAA Championship meet. Peoples will be first up in the hammer at 1:30 p.m. PT. She enters the competition with the fifth-best throw in the NCAA this season after she tossed a school record mark of 66.17m (217-1) at the Tom Botts Invitational in Columbia.
Haarklau will be up next in the pole vault at 4:45 p.m. PT, taking to the runway for the first time since her exciting performance at the West Preliminary Round two weeks ago. Haarklau entered the competition in Austin, Tx., with a season's best jump of 4.05m (13-3.50) and, rising to the occasion, improved upon that bar to mark in at 4.24m (13-11), good for 11th in the region and a qualification into this week's meet. This is the third consecutive year for Haarklau at the national championships, and she enters with two All-American honors already under her belt.
Closing out the competition for the Tiger women is Rushin, who will take to the ring at 5:40 p.m. PT on Wednesday for the shot put competition. Like Peoples, Rushin enters the field with the fifth-best throw in the NCAA this season after she hit a PR of 17.72m (58-1.75) during the Tom Botts Invitational in Columbia. Rushin is also no stranger to the national championship scene, as she has already claimed three All-American finishes for the indoor and outdoor shot put.
Freshman John Warren will be the final Tiger to compete this week as he makes his NCAA Championship debut on Friday in the men's triple jump, starting at 4:30 p.m. PT. Warren, who placed ninth at the West Preliminary Round, currently holds the fifth-best mark in Mizzou history at 15.75m (51-8.25).
