AUSTIN, Tx. - The 2015 outdoor track & field post-season continues to heat up as 24 Tigers make the trek to Austin, Tx., this week for the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds, held in Mike A. Myers Stadium from May 28-30. Only the top 48 in the region for each event qualify into the meet, which will run concurrently with the NCAA East Preliminary Round in Jacksonville, Fl. The top 12 finishers in each event out of these preliminary meets will advance on to the NCAA Championship Finals at the historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., from June 10-13.
Mizzou enters the weekend's events with five ranked within the top 12 for their respective events, and five more within sight in the top 20. Topping this list for the women is the duo of senior throwers Jill Rushin and Kearsten Peoples, who currently sit at No. 4 and No. 8, respectively, in the women's shot put. Peoples also ranks well in the hammer, holding the No. 3 position with her school record performance of 66.17m (217-1). Peoples also holds Missouri school records in the shot put and discus, and is slated to compete in all three of those record events this week. Rushin, who sits at No. 2 in school history for the discus and shot put, will compete in both on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Fischer is also in a good position for advancement on to Eugene, currently ranked 11th in the west region for the 10,000m run. She holds the Missouri school record for the event with her 33:12.37 performance at the 2014 NCAA Championship, good for ninth overall.
On the men's side, senior Macauley Garton leads the way with his No. 3 ranking in the javelin, a position earned after his All-SEC and school record performance two weeks ago (77.47m // 254-2). The next highest ranked Tiger man is senior Jonathan Ilori, who sits at No. 5 in the triple jump with his SEC performance of 16.07m (52-8.75).
