TUSCON, Ariz. - Facing No. 13 Arizona (9-1) on the road, Mizzou Men's Basketball (5-4) fell by a score of 88-52 on Sunday at the McKale Center in Tucson, Ariz. The Tigers cut the Wildcats' early lead to seven halfway through the first half, but Arizona pushed the advantage back to 19 by the end of the half.
Sophomore guard Namon Wright (Los Angeles, Calif.) led the Tigers in scoring with nine points. Wright and freshman forward Kevin Puryear (Blue Springs, Mo.) each had five rebounds to lead Mizzou. For the third game in a row, sophomore forward Jakeenan Gant (Springfield, Ga.) came off the bench and contributed solid play, scoring eight points in 17 minutes.
Wright and Gant fueled the Tigers in the first half, scoring seven and six points, respectively. Mizzou scored seven-straight points to close Arizona's lead to seven halfway through the half. Gant posted the first four points, first on a jumper, then on a two-hand slam off a solid transition pass from freshman guard Terrence Phillips (Orange County, Calif.). Wright hit a three-pointer on the next possession to make the score 22-15. Arizona utilized a 20-8 run over the final eight minutes of the half to lead 42-23 at the break.
Junior guard Wes Clark (Detroit, Mich.) scored six points in the second half to lead the Tigers after halftime. Twice, Clark dribbled around a defender, cut towards the basket, and finished at the rim with a layup. Arizona's offense proved to be too potent however, as the Wildcats shot 56 percent from the field in the game.
Mizzou returns home to Mizzou Arena to face NC State on Saturday, Dec. 19. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. CT on the SEC Network.
