MIZZOU WRAPS UP REGULAR SEASON WITH BATTLE LINE RIVALRY AT ARKANSAS
- The Missouri Tigers (5-6 overall, 1-6 in Southeastern Conference play) will lower the curtain on their 2015 regular season when they head south to Fayetteville, Ark., where they'll take on the Arkansas Razorbacks (6-5, 4-3) on a Black Friday showdown on Nov. 27th. The game will be televised by CBS and will kick off at 1:30 p.m. (central time)…
- The game is officially called the Battle Line Rivalry presented by Shelter Insurance®, and it will mark the second-straight year that the permanently-designated cross-division rivals will square off. Mizzou won the first meeting as SEC members last year in Columbia by a 21-14 score, with the win sealing the Tigers' second-straight East Division title…
- Mizzou is coming off of a 19-8 home loss to Tennessee, and is searching for one last win to make itself bowl eligible, and to also extend the coaching career of Head Coach Gary Pinkel. Pinkel announced on Nov. 20th that he would be stepping down following the conclusion of the 2015 season, due to health reasons. A win would make the Tigers bowl eligible for the third-straight year, and the 11th time in Pinkel's 15 years at the helm…
- Arkansas is coming off a heartbreaking 51-50 home loss to Mississippi State in a game that saw 101 points and 1110 yards of total offense light up the stat sheets. Arkansas QB Brandon Allen threw for 406 yards and an SEC record-tying seven touchdowns, but it wasn't enough to overcome the 631 yards of offense put up by the Bulldogs, as QB Dak Prescott threw for 508 yards of his own, and five scores. Arkansas trailed 31-14 late in the second quarter, but rallied to score 28-straight points for a 42-31 lead midway through the third quarter, only to see Prescott lead MSU to three fourth-quarter TDs and the comeback win…
- With just one regular season game remaining, it is important to note just how good Mizzou senior LB Kentrell Brothers has been this season. One of the unquestionable leaders of Mizzou defense that ranks 10th nationally in total defense and seventh nationally in scoring defense, Brothers has been nothing short of sensational. His 140 total tackles lead the nation, nine ahead of the next closest tacklers and has broken double-digit tackles in 10 of 11 games including six straight (the first Tiger under Pinkel to accomplish that feat). He also has two interceptions and leads the nation in blocked kicks (three) while adding 9.5 tackles for loss, a fumble recovery and two pass break-ups. He was a midseason All-American by multiple publications and should be a major figure when national awards are announced following the season.
- As good as Kentrell Brothers has been, Mizzou has developed a tremendous reputation for developing defensive linemen and #DLineZou has again been a huge factor to Mizzou's defensive production again this season. Led by the underclassmen duo of SO DE Charles Harris and FR DE Walter Brady, #DLineZou is a hige reason why Mizzou ranks third nationally while leading the SEC with 97 total tackles for loss. With three more TFLs versus Arkansas, Mizzou will break 100 TFLs for the third consecutive season (first time that would be accomplished under Pinkel). The 8.8 TFLs per game are currently on pace to be the best under Pinkel.
LAST TIME OUT
- Jalen Hurd ran for 151 yards, and Aaron Medley kicked four field goals to lead Tennessee to a 19-8 win over Mizzou at Memorial Stadium Saturday night.
- An announced crowd of 59,575 fans braved the coldest home game of the Gary Pinkel era to witness a defensive struggle as both teams combined for just two touchdowns.
- Senior LB Kentrell Brothers racked up 12 tackles, his tenth overall and sixth consecutive game with double-digit tackles on the season. Senior LB Michael Scherer added 10 tackles and 2.5 for loss. In all, nine different Tigers combined for 10 TFL's.
- Freshman QB Drew Lock threw for 135 yards and ran for another 11 and a touchdown for Mizzou (5-6, 1-6).
- Medley kicked field goals on three of the Vols' first four drives, and Josh Dobbs made it a 16-0 lead at the half on an 8-yard keeper. The Tiger defense made it a closer game than it could have been; Tennessee (7-4, 4-3 SEC) had 216 yards on 44 plays in the opening 30 minutes.
- The defense's success extended to the scoreboard in the second half, holding Tennessee to just another field goal before the Tigers punched in their first score of the night. On fourth-and-one at the goal line with 9:49 left in the game, Lock rolled out of the pocket and dove for the pylon for the first rushing touchdown of his career. Lock then connected with sophomore TE Jason Reese for a two-point conversion to narrow the deficit to 19-8.
SERIES VS. ARKANSAS
- Mizzou and Arkansas have met six times over the years and once since Mizzou joined the SEC in 2012. Mizzou owns a 4-2 advantage over the Razorbacks in history and Friday's game is the first between the two programs in Fayetteville. Mizzou head coach Gary Pinkel is 2-1 vs. Arkansas with two of those three games coming in bowl games - Mizzou lost the 2003 Independence Bowl, 27-14, while Mizzou defeated Arkansas in the 2008 Cotton Bowl, 38-7, thanks to a Cotton Bowl record 281 rushing yards and four TDs. The other win for Pinkel came last season as Mizzou defeated Bret Bielema's Razorbacks, 21-14, to clinch Mizzou's second consecutive SEC East Championship and the fifth 10-win season under Pinkel. More on that game is below.
- In six all-time meetings, the average margin of victory in each game is 10.7 points, the second-closest margin of victory for any SEC team in an all-time series against Mizzou. Remarkably, Mizzou and Arkansas have never met in Fayetteville and have met just once in the state of Arkansas with the Razorbacks claiming a 7-6 win in Little Rock back in 1963. .
LAST TIME VS. ARKANSAS
- Marcus Murphy scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 12-yard run with 4:38 remaining, and Markus Golden recovered a fumble to seal No. 17 Missouri's 21-14 victory against Arkansas and send the Tigers to the SEC championship game for the second straight season.
- Missouri tied it at 14 early in the fourth quarter with a 98-yard drive capped by Jimmie Hunt's 4-yard TD reception and a reverse pass by receiver Bud Sasser to Darius White for the 2-point conversion.
Arkansas was driving for the tie when Kentrell Brothers stripped Alex Collins and Golden recovered with 2:13 to go at the Missouri 35 to thwart Arkansas' bid to tie it. - The Razorbacks had won two straight, both shutouts against ranked teams.
- A sellout crowd of 71,168 stuck around for the fourth quarter surge by the Tigers. Fans mobbed the field after a kneel down ended it while stadium personnel took down the goal posts to prevent fans from toting them off to a nearby tavern. Ray Charles' "Georgia on My Mind" - a nod to the site of the SEC Championship - played while the stadium slowly emptied.
- It was the fifth division title in eight seasons for Missouri (two in the SEC and three in the Big 12), which also reached 10 victories for the fifth time under coach Gary Pinkel.
SCOUTING ARKANSAS
- Arkansas is coming off of a 51-50 home loss to Mississippi State last week. QB Brandon Allen went 30-of-43 for 406 yards and seven TDs in the loss but the Razorbacks were limited to just 73 yards on the ground on 29 carries. Arkansas has been exceptional against the run this year, allowing just 122.5 yards per game, but is allowing 302.8 per contest through the air.
