BATON ROUGE, La. – LSU scored two unanswered second half goals to post a 2-1 win over the Mizzou soccer team Friday night in Baton Rouge, La. The loss dropped Mizzou to 5-4-4 overall and 3-2-1 in Southeastern Conference play, while LSU improved to 8-3-3 and 2-3-1.
After a scoreless first half, Missouri struck first on a set piece in the 57th minute. Sophomore Kaitlyn Clark (Liberty, Mo.) sent a driven corner five yards in front of the net that found the head of junior Melanie Donaldson (Florrisant, Mo.). Donaldson flicked the corner into the right side netting for a 1-0 Mizzou advantage and her first goal of the season.
LSU took advantage of a loose ball in the box to knot the match at 1-1 in the 64th minute of play. Mizzou could not clear the ball and LSU's Gabriela Maldonado pounced on it and unleashed a rocket past redshirt sophomore keeper Kristen Rivers (Lawrenceville, Ga.) and into the upper netting for a tie game.
Six minutes later, scored the eventual game-winner on a breakaway. Debbie Hahn got behind the defense and sent a low shot barely past Rivers' outstretched gloves and into the left netting.
LSU outshot Mizzou 16-13 overall in the game, while Missouri had a 6-2 edge in corners.
Rivers made a career best six saves in net in the contest.
Mizzou returns to the pitch on Sunday, Oct. 11 as the squad hosts Georgia at 1 p.m.
