NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Senior Reagan Russell (Sugar Land, Texas) scored early in the second half to propel the Mizzou soccer team to its fourth consecutive win with a 1-0 defeat over Vanderbilt Sunday afternoon in Nashville, Tenn. The victory improved the Tigers' record to 9-4-4 overall and 7-2-1 in Southeastern Conference action with one regular season match remaining. The Commodores fell to 7-704 and 3-4-3.
Mizzou will enter its finale with at least a share of first in the Southeastern Conference and a chance to clinch a regular season title with a win over Texas A&M on Thursday.
After a scoreless first half, the Tigers took control early in the second on team soccer. Sophomore Kaitlyn Clark (Liberty, Mo.) sent a cross from the left endline all the way across the box to an oncoming Russell. The senior one-timed a shot past the Commodore keeper and into the left side of the net for the eventual game-winner in the 49th minute. The tally was also Russell's third of the season and second in three games.
The Commodores almost tied it up in the 55th minute but Lydia Simmons' attempt struck the crossbar and redshirt sophomore keeper Kristen Rivers (Lawrenceville, Ga.) was there to make the second chance save.
Mizzou had more chances as the second half elapsed but were held off the scoreboard by strong goalkeeping and bad luck. A shot from sophomore Jessica Johnson (Los Angeles, Calif.) in the 69th minute struck off the left post, while Vanderbilt keeper Chrisiana Ogunsami made diving saves on shots from Russell and Clark.
The Tigers had a 12-10 edge in shots and a 7-5 lead in shots on goal in the match.
Rivers made five saves in net in the contest.
Mizzou concludes the regular season on Thursday, Oct. 29 with an 8 p.m. CT match against Texas A&M. The contest will be televised live on the SEC Network.
