COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Mizzou soccer team posted its fourth shutout of the season and used goals from sophomores Jessica Johnson (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Alli Magaletta (Chesterfield, Mo.) to post a 2-0 victory over Georgia Sunday afternoon at Walton Stadium. The win improved the Tigers' record to 6-4-4 overall and 4-2-1 in Southeastern Conference action, while the Bulldogs fell to 3-9-1 and 2-5-0.
The two goals extended an offensive output for Mizzou over the last five games, where the squad has averaged 1.8 goals per contest after a 0.4 goals per game average the previous five matches.
Redshirt sophomore Kristen Rivers (Lawrenceville, Ga.) notched her first career clean sheet after stopping four shots on net in the win.
Missouri outshot Georgia 21-7 in the match, including a 13-4 edge in shots on goal.
The Tiger offense peppered the Bulldog defense early and often at the start of the match before Johnson broke the scoreless match. The sophomore ran onto a perfect pass from junior Melanie Donaldson (Florissant, Mo.) and slotted a low shot off the left post and into the net for a 1-0 Missouri advantage. The tally was the second goal of the season for Johnson, and Donaldson's second assist as well.
A set piece early in the second half set up Mizzou's second goal of the contest to mark the third consecutive game the Tigers scored off a set piece. After Georgia foul in the Missouri offensive end, senior Candace Johnson (Dallas, Texas) sent a driven free kick five yards in front of the goal. A flicked header from Magaletta froze the Bulldog keeper and flew into the back of the net for a 2-0 Tiger lead. Magaletta's tally was her second of the season as well, both off headers.
The Tiger defense stood firm to allow only two shots in the second half and only one on frame.
Mizzou returns to the pitch on Sunday, Oct. 18 with a 1 p.m. home contest against Tennessee on Senior Day. The match will be televised live on ESPNU.
