Record Book Marks Fall in Kentucky

LEXINGTON, Ky. - In only their third meet weekend of the indoor season, the Mizzou Track & Field men and women have already began re-writing the record books, leaving little doubt that there is much in store in the months to come. The Tigers closed out the second and final day of the Rod McCravy Memorial Meet on Saturday (January 24) with five new All-Time Top Ten marks and nine personal record (PR) performances, adding to the four PR's from Friday's competitions.
The Tigers took on quite the field during the two-day meet, hosted by Kentucky, as the competition boasted 16 of the top 25 teams in the nation and 83 returning All-Americans, including 22 NCAA Champions, from the 2014 season.
"This meet was a terrific test this early in the season," Head Coach Brett Halter said. "Many of the national marks that will get people into the NCAA Championship will come from this meet, and we were right in the mix. I think that, for where we are in our training and what we're trying to do with getting set for the post-season, our team is in good shape. We just need to stay engaged in the process and keep moving forward."
Kicking the day off was junior Ser Whitaker in the final three events of his first heptathlon competition of the season. Whitaker began the weekend with PR performances in the 60-meter dash (7.14) and shot put (13.16m / 43-2.25), entering day two in fourth-place overall. He had solid performances across the board on Saturday, and finished the competition in fifth overall (5179), within 40 points of his lifetime best score of 5211 points.
Seniors Kearsten Peoples and Jill Rushin were next up for the Tigers, taking to the shot put ring for the first time this season. Peoples and Rushin ended the 2014 outdoor season with the No. 1 and No. 2 shot put marks in the NCAA, respectively, and are already sitting in the top ten for 2015. Rushin led the way for the pair on Saturday, throwing 16.49m (54-1.25) to place second, followed closely by Peoples in third (16.45m / 53-11.75). Peoples also opened with her first weight throw competition of the season on Friday night, placing second in the field (21.03m / 69-0) to open the season with the No. 7 mark in the NCAA thus far.
The men's triple jump competition closed out the day's field events, with freshman John Warren making his season debut in the event with one of the top ten performances in Mizzou history. Warren led the field in the first flight, moving on to the final round with his top jump of 15.29m (50-2). He bested that mark with his sixth and final attempt, landing at 15.37m (50-5.25) to place sixth overall and move into the No. 6 spot in the Mizzou record books. Tying him for sixth in the finals was teammate Tony Carodine, junior, who marked in at 15.37m (50-5.25) with his first attempt.
Saturday also saw the return of junior Markesh Woodson to the Nutter Field House track, the site of his first of six school record performances. Woodson broke the 60-meter dash record for the first time during the 2013 Rod McCravy Memorial Meet, clocking through in 6.69. He would end 2013 with a final record performance of 6.60, a time that was within sight on Saturday with his 6.67 performance for seventh overall.
The 400-meter dash saw a trio of new All-Time Top Ten marks from juniors Sandrae Farquharson and Ayo Adewole, and freshman Jerrad Mason. Farquharson claimed the No. 6 spot in the record books with her 55.77 finish, while Adewole edged her way into the No. 9 spot after earning a lifetime best time of 56.28. Mason also nudged his way into the top ten lists, running the tenth-fastest time in school history (48.26) to place 17th in the field.
Freshman Karissa Schweizer rounded out the All-Time Top Ten performances for the weekend, finishing her first mile as a Tiger in 4:46.75. The reigning SEC Cross Country Freshman of the Year placed tenth in the field and came in at No. 9 in school history. Joining her in the field was junior Liz Reida, who continued her return with a win in heat three, good for 16th overall, in 4:54.67.
The men's and women's 3000-meter runs rounded out the weekend's events, with sophomores Kaitlyn Fischer and Teylar Adelsberger both earning new PR's for their first 3000m of the season. Fischer led the pair with her 12th place finish in a stacked field, crossing in 9:40.59.
"We're just going to continue trying to get sharp," Halter said. "We're still in January and we can't get distracted by anything that we're not doing. We need to stay on task on the plan and trying to get ready for the SEC and NCAA Championships."
The Tigers will be right back at it next week, traveling to New York City for the prestigious Armory Invitational on Friday and Saturday (January 30-31). For the latest on Mizzou Track & Field, stay tuned to MUTigers.com and follow the team on Twitter @MIZ_TrackField.
