Garton with a Victory at Drake Relays

Senior Macauley Garton finally claimed his Drake Relays title on Friday (April 24), after narrowly missing the winning finish in 2014 with a second place performance.  Garton took the lead among the collegians in the field early on, bouncing back from a rough opening round to toss 70.41m (231-0) on his second attempt.

DES MOINES, Ia. - Senior Macauley Garton finally claimed his Drake Relays title on Friday (April 24), after narrowly missing the winning finish in 2014 with a second place performance.  Garton took the lead among the collegians in the field early on, bouncing back from a rough opening round to toss 70.41m (231-0) on his second attempt. 

Garton is one of seven PR's thus far this weekend as the Tigers take on a four-meet series to close out their regular season travel schedule.  Competitions started on Wednesday (April 22) at the Emporia State Mid-Week Open, with the Drake and Penn Relays opening on Thursday (April 23), and the Triton Invitational in San Diego, Calif., joining the mix on Friday (April 24).

Freshman Alex Pascal joined Garton on the javelin runway on Friday, hitting a PR mark of his own with a third attempt measurement of 64.20m (210-7) to take fourth among the collegiates in the field.  Both Garton and Pascal entered the weekend with two of the top ten marks in Mizzou history, with Garton holding the No. 3 spot in the record books with his previous PR (71.15m / 233-5) and Pascal sitting at No. 7 (63.35m / 207-10).  They will retain these positions coming out of the weekend, despite the PR marks.

Events will resume in full swing on Saturday, starting at 10 a.m. with senior Mitch Hatten in the men's high jump.

Other events to watch out for on Saturday include the women's pole vault competition, featuring school record holder Katrine Haarklau (4.35m / 14-3.25), along with fellow All-Time Top Ten members, sophomore Alyssa Applebee (No. 3) and senior Maggie Givens (No. 5).

The men's and women's 3000m steeplechase will also feature a couple of current All-Time Top Ten athletes, starting with senior Courtney Wood, who currently holds the second-fasatest time in school history with her PR of 10:21.32.  Junior Sam Dickerson will follow, and currently ranks at No. 5 in school history with his PR from earlier this season (8:51.69).

Other All-Time Top Ten athletes to look out for during Saturday's competition include: senior Jonathan Ilori (No. 4, triple jump), senior Brian Duncan (No. 9, hammer throw), senior Drake Stuedemann (No. 9, 400m hurdles), and junior Will Crocker (No. 4, 1500m run).

PENN RELAYS

Out east, a squad of Tiger sprinters and jumpers saw their second day of competition at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Penn.  Junior Markesh Woodson proved to be one of the highlights out of the day, battling through the cold weather to place second overall in the 100m dash preliminary heats (10.40).  He will move on to the finals in the event on Saturday afternoon.

The day will start, though, at 9 a.m. ET with a pair of All-Time Top Ten members in the men's triple jump.  Junior Tony Carodine currently leads the pair at No. 5 in the record books with his PR of 15.64m (51-3.75), with freshman John Warren not far behind at 15.62m (51-3), the No. 7 jump in school history.

Seniors Kearsten Peoples and Jill Rushin continued their busy week on Friday, retaking the throws ring for the first time since Wednesday's Mid-Week Open in Emporia, Kan.  Peoples kicked the day off with a fourth-place finish in the hammer, just off from her current school record mark (64.42m / 211-4) with a top toss of 62.56m (205-3).  She returned later in the day with Rushin to take on the women's discus competition, where they placed 11th and 25th overall, respectively.

Both will return to action on Friday morning with the women's shot put competition at 11 a.m. PT.
